Are you threatening me right now?” I growled in hopes to scare him but he didn’t look fazed by my growls which would have scared anyone else. “That won’t work for me! But for now, I had to read. I flipped the page of the big textbook. I was going through one of the works that were given to me in the Beta training class. I had little to no interest in reading these books, but I still had to read them anyway. In order to be a perfect Beta to your Alpha, you had to go through these classes. And the last thing I wanted to be? A flop Beta. I was putting all my mind into this reading even if it was taking me more time to comprehend the text than it was to read.

I said, swirling the wine lazily, like blood in a glass, not bothering to look at him. He groaned like someone being asked to clean a murder scene. “You know I’m not a damn spy, right? I’m your beta. You’ve got wolves for this kind of thing. Use them. When the pack's interests are on the line, you can't just ignore it." I smiled. "What about your outstanding Beta? She's incredibly capable. I'm just someone who gets deals with her looks. How could I possibly compare to Peyton?" I couldn't see Matt's expression, but from his tone, I knew he was barely holding back his anger

He said, "I meant if you wanted me to dismiss her. There's more than enough reason to fire her. Harassment at work, safety risks, and also, she just threatened you." The car glided out of the parking lot. The night air rushed in, and for the first time, I felt safe. "I know about your past with that Beta. You suppressed yourself for seven years, and he never appreciated it," he said quietly. We stopped at a red light, and he turned to me with a shine in his eyes. "I want you to know something, Lyrik. A Beta's mark means nothing for Alpha's mate. An Alpha's mark can fully replace it," he said.

But no one said anything about that… I take a breath. I straighten. I pull out my phone and cancel the doctor. I call Calder next. “Hey, I'm on my way.” ♣♣♣ My Beta is at his desk, going through paperwork. He looks up when I enter, and a slow grin spreads across his face. "Well, well," he says, leaning back in his chair. "The prodigal Alpha returns." I drop into the chair across from his desk. "What?"

Beta not only knows how to write everything that needs to be done, but he can rattle off the codes like it’s the alphabet. He would be the one to ask. Not me.’

The beta of this pack and when introducing yourself to me, you thought that piece of information was not worth sharing?" I questioned, folding my hands in front of my chest disapprovingly. Men like him need to be taken down a few pegs. He stopped in front of a door, pushing it open. Beta was on the bed, reading a novel. “She has more sass than you think.” “I am not surprised. Her eyes hold fire.” He looked up and I shivered. It was like his eyes got colder. “She happens to think she doesn’t want to fuck us.” “Also, not surprised.” The Beta smiled faintly, giving me a shock. “I didn’t know you smiled.” The Gamma laughed, pushing me forward. “I like your mouth, little one.”
