“Dadddddyyyyy!” Milka clapped her hands. I turned around sharply. She pulled herself up on the TV stand and stared at the screen like a lovesick teenager. But my heart was thumping double time, my palms almost sweating. It took a few beats of the music to realize it was just Dirty J(Conor’s) latest song on MTV and not the man himself walking through the door. I forced a laugh at myself. Shit, I had been back in Santa Clarita for ten minutes, and I was already thinking James Conor would burst my door down for the daughter he didn’t even know existed.

With that, I hung up and couldn’t fall back asleep again after that. That same morning, a viral video exploded across major social media platforms. I wish this was a nightmare." Another set of actors to make me seem crazy. Bloody asshats!

The screen flashed back to the frozen video of me and Leo. I could not move. I could not breathe. The phone was still in my hand. "Mom?" Ethan’s voice was small in my ear. "Mom, what is going on?" I looked at the TV. I looked at the woman on the screen. She looked like me, but she was a stranger. Her life was falling apart on live television. Leo had the money. My daughter was gone. My face was on the news. And my rival was about to attack. I had tried to fix one problem. Now I had lost everything.

Her best friend. “Fine, I’ll figure something out, wait in the living room.” When my daughter was gone I shook the man in my bed awake. “Hey, I’m pretty sure we fucked last night,” I said when his eyes opened. “Are you sober enough to drive me to drop my daughter off at school??” He groaned as he sat up and looked around. “I don’t have my car,” he said. “I can call a rideshare app now, I’ll pay.” He yawned. “I’m Andrew by the way.”
