A condemned road of all normal roads that exists in the city. Stacy eyed me again before saying, “I wasn’t the one who told you.” Oh Stacy, you wouldn’t have to make me promise twice. ~ Minutes later, I was behind the wheel of my new car, hands trembling on the steering as I followed the path Stacy had mapped out for me. My heart pounded with every mile. The headlights cut through trees that grew denser the further I drove. The road turned jagged, narrowing endlessly, the kind of path cars weren’t meant to handle. I knew I couldn’t drive further without risking everything.

Welcome to Jolly Road. Raverine read the huge and torn billboard on top of an under-construction building. Rustic beauty and some vintage aesthetic would be its description for tourists, but eerie and deadly for someone who lives for a long time near this road. It’s the road of the dead, mourning souls, and a hideout of evil. Raverine parked his car beside a street light that emits a flickering, low light. He turned off the engine of his car and examined the sidewalks. Raverine looked for his gun underneath his car's passenger seat and tucked it into the right side of his jeans.

' 'Do you remember the plot described in the novel? Javen glanced around and instantly understood what she meant. Looking at the hazy fog on the horizon, he read it out word by word: 'There are low bungalows everywhere, and the brick-red walls are engraved with crooked and childish words, which seems to be some mysterious symbol. A road leads directly to the mountains, and there are not tall and straight poplars planted on both sides ... ' Javen stopped reciting. On both sides of this road, it is poplars.

Out in the open world, things were going smoothly for Eallric as he drove through the familiar highways (like Coalrior) which just like before, were filled with people, but this time around, all defunct. But still, he couldn't stop for a moment to check out anything and so he drove on.

The road appeared. "Here," I said. "Turn here." He turned. The road was the one I remembered, the specific and particular quality of a Connecticut back road in November, the stone walls on either side, the particular and skeletal quality of the trees without their leaves, the way the road curved through the landscape with the unhurried and specific quality of a road that had been there long enough to know where it was going and was not in a hurry to arrive.

“Still not great.” I came further into the room. “There’s something I need to tell you.” She waited. “My guys found a road today. It’s in the southern boundary, past the ridge. Hasn’t been used in at least five years. We’re going out tonight to take a look.” Something changed in her face. Not surprise exactly, it was more like recognition. “The road of thorns,” she said. I went still. “What did you just say?” “That’s what it’s called.” She said it simply, like she was telling me the sky was grey. “That’s what people who actually knew it called it. The thorns grow over the markers in the wet season. They come back every year.”

The crowd around the building run off to the other side, like sheep, making a clearing, and Celia motions for Tessa to do her thing. Tessa nods, and once there's space enough, Nova joins her. Raising their fists, they smash the road, cracks spreading horizontal from where they stand. Chunks of road and ground disperse, creating a gap in between the citizens and the Main City's head office. Once they're done with that, they re-group, charging into the capital's building. Julia continued: “Then I saw another road.” Everyone went still. “A second road?” “Yes.” “Same highway.” “Same rain.” “Same crash.” “Except the car was upside down.” “And you were still inside.” Elena felt cold. Julia looked at her. “I ran toward you.” “And the road moved away.” Noah stepped closer. “Placement divergence.” Julia glared. “I called it hell.” Noah lowered his eyes.

“Damn it!” I dropped my head to the steering wheel and took a minute to feel sorry for myself as I imagined the six-o’clock news headline, “Young woman murdered after car breaks down in sketchy area of Portland. It’s surprising since she comes from law-enforcement royalty. Another statistic? It certainly looks that way.”
