After all, I didn’t want the people who loved me to worry. I was confident I could carry this secret forever, all the way into old age with the man I loved. However, the Knights had fallen. Worst of all, it was Ryan who destroyed them. The stone in my heart kept shifting. Every deep breath tore through my chest with blinding pain. Doctor Harvey told me there was no hope. The shard had sliced open my heart, the center of it nothing more than pulp. The only reason I was still breathing was because my brain hadn’t realized my heart was already a hollow shell.

I went to the kitchen to open the buttle of wine, poured myself a generous glass, and decided to put my annoyance into the novel I was about to finish. I finished writing the final chapter along with finishing the bottle. I chose a tragic ending with Serenity sacrificing herself in the final scene allowing Troy to kill his nemesis. I figured that it completed a circle. Troy started following the path of revenge after his loved-one died, and now he ended his vengeance with another person who loved him died…

he murmured, "wait for me. Once I’ve taken care of everything, I’ll come back and make it up to you." But I would not wait. ... By the time Lucas resolved the company’s affairs and came looking for me, I was already gone. I had quit my teaching job, left the city, and erased all traces of myself from his world. "So what, Dawn? Our wedding's next week. If we break up now, how will you explain it to your family?" Noelle immediately burst into tears. "I'm sorry, Dawn. I'll end the pregnancy right away." Blake instantly pulled her into his arms and glared at me coldly. "Don't you dare! Dawn Nichols, you had an abortion before—who knows if you can even still have children. You should be thanking Noelle instead. "The fact that I'm still willing to go through with the wedding with you is already more than generous enough. You're such a slut—who else other than me would even want you?"

Half a month later, in the middle of the night, my phone buzzed with a message. It was from Lex. [Audrey, I'm sorry.] I stared at it for a moment, then put the phone down. I didn't reply. Our story had ended long ago. I closed that chapter. From now on, our lives will go their own way—like two roads that'll never cross again.

I wanted to ask what these decades meant. Halfway through, I stopped. The answer was already before me. Asking again would only invite self-humiliation. I started laughing and couldn't stop, tears welling in my eyes and rolling down again. They hit the floor, as if they could pierce through the floor... Just like how the sorrow had pierced through my heart. My eyes were red as I smashed the entire wall of photos. Frames shattered and glass fragments sprayed everywhere, just like how my heart shattered along with them.
