She liked her world like this; controlled, immaculate, and hers. Her assistant had just left the report on the collaboration between Duval Holdings and CrossTech, and Clarisse skimmed it with the cool efficiency of a surgeon. Numbers, timelines, projected returns, upcoming brief, it was all there. Damon Cross, as always, delivered results with a surgeon’s blade.

He's changed his shirt—a dark gray Henley now, sleeves pushed up, hair still damp at the temples. He spots me immediately, crosses the room in four long strides, and slides into the seat across from me. His eyes are dark, intense, scanning my face like he's checking for damage. "I got rid of him." His voice is low, rough. "Told him I had a headache and was heading home. He bought it." "And Jade?"

When reality finally returned, it came with weight. They adjusted themselves quietly and stepped out into the open space beyond the room. Where others could see them, they walked past each other without acknowledgment. Teacher. Student. Strangers again.

Ethan said, stubborn, but the edge in his tone didn’t mask the hesitation. “You already did. That’s why your answer’s wrong,” Marcus said simply, like the truth of it should have been enough to make Ethan submit.
