He opens his mouth to protest, but when our eyes connect, his demeanor changes to something far more submissive as he answers, “I’ll see it done, Luna.”
“Good,” I nod, as I look over my shoulder and see the nannies holding my children, rocking them to sleep. “Good.”
As I say this, the air stills and the universe seems to shift, as if the world is holding its breath, a bubble of tension rising up around us.
And then all at once the tension burst. Portals open all around us, blinking into existence. I can’t see where they lead, but I don’t need to. It’s bad enough that they’re here. It means the wards sealing this room have been compromised.
