On Swift Horses Novels & Stories

He said. I did what he said and Apple came nearer so I stroked his mane. "How old is he?" I asked while stroking his mane. "He's eight." Wow....he's big. I then went to the three horses. "That's Sasa, Storm, and Blaze. Blaze is Stella's. Sasa is Storm's mother." Oh that's why they look a bit alike. I stroked each of them and I liked Storm. Marc gave me carrots to feed him and the others.

They spent almost a day's travel past the Dark Forest before David relaxed. He made their traveling days shorter and went easier on the wild mares. David restrains the two horses according to their need and in no time they are galloping it. Unlike natural flocks, these mares were every color, shape, and size. The only thing each had in common was the halter it wore on its head for easy catching.

“What breeds did your father have?” “Scottish Holsteins mostly,” Sophia said as she thought about it. “They are smaller and have weird fur on their backs but they are much hardier producers for their size and lower cost to feed.” “We have angus at the ranch. Can you ride?” Micha asked. “A cow or a horse?” Sophia asked with a laugh. “Either,” Micha said laughing as he looked down to the tiny woman and saw her smile. “Both,” Sophia replied. “I can ride pretty well.”

Roxanne changed quickly, her eyes shining with excitement. "You look beautiful in anything, my fair princess," Jaxon complimented her as she stepped out. He took her to the stable, where twenty horses of different breeds awaited. There was Sugarplum, a beautiful chestnut mare with a white blaze on her forehead, Noir, a sleek black stallion with a star-shaped marking on his nose, a proud Arabian named Zephyr, a gentle giant of a Shire horse named Thunder, and several others, each with their unique markings and personalities.

Leandro laughed and pointed to a white horse, "Can Swiftbolt do? This is Michael's horse, it has a gentle temperament." "Okay." The good horses were all fostered here by these enthusiasts, while the horses in the other stable were for ordinary tourists to choose from. A comparison immediately reveals the difference. Even the gentle Swiftbolts, they looked much more imposing than they actually were, she certainly had no objections. The caretaker led Swiftbolt out, and Leandro asked Charlotte to get acquainted with Swiftbolt first. Once Swiftbolt became familiar with Charlotte's scent, the caretaker handed the reins over to Charlotte.

Then I reach out in front of me for the string to pull to turn the light on. “Sorry, guys,” I say to Bailey and Alibi, the other two horses. All three are Quarter Horses with similar levels of training. Sundance is the most ornery of the bunch, which is probably why he’s my favorite. His coat is dark chestnut, and he has a thick white blaze on his face. I take another drink of wine and grab a towel from the cross ties. Shaking it out to make sure there are no spiders, I fold it in two and lay it down in the aisle next to Sundance’s stall.

Sunny, Lowe, Knight, and Aster are just behind us, not far away. "Guys! Let's have a race! Whoever loses won't join us for dinner!" Kenzie shouts at us. I grip the rein straps again and instruct my horse to run faster. I'm relieved that this horse is so good, since he responds to my cues and starts running as quickly as possible.

As I glanced at the tree, we were now just 400 meters away. "We have to win Onyx!" I spoke to the beautiful horse that was delightful to be used in a race. The kingdom had hundreds of horses, but they seldom used them. One main reason was that these humans could shift in their wolves, and obviously, wolves were five times faster than horses. As we neared the tree, both Onyx and Frost jumped high, beating the finished line. "We both won!" We exclaimed in joy as we got down from our horses and hugged each other. We didn't notice the tree was located at the borders of the kingdom.

There was just one problem. They weren’t running away from the guards, but towards them. “Azrael!” I shouted in warning. He flashed me a cheeky grin, “Did you know Inferno horses are the strongest, fastest creatures in our realm?” “No—” The word morphed into a scream when the horses leaped, sending us sailing over the heads of the guards and the man with the whip. A laugh exploded from my chest, driven by sheer adrenaline, when we landed. The horses didn’t slow, weaving between carriages and jumping over vendor stalls. People dove out of the way, scrambling into alcoves and various shops.
