Off Limits
I asked.
"Now," he said, his voice a whisper that felt like a command. "We see what happens when the machine stops running."
He pulled me closer, the distance between us finally gone, the rain falling around us like a curtain. We were here, at the edge of the world, and there was nothing left to do but breathe.
I leaned into him, the scent of him—rain, cold metal, and the faint, underlying warmth of his skin—filling my senses. He was the anchor I had needed, the storm I had feared, and the only person in the world who understood the truth of who I was.
