I follow her silent direction, squinting into the darkness until my eyes settle on a still figure sprawled across the sidewalk. It’s a man, one of the many I recognize from our trip to the library. He’s another victim to the ruthless carnage that took place in this town. But as I continue to stare at him, I notice the ragged rise and fall of his chest. He’s alive. My pulse quickens, and I take a diffident step forward. The glass seems to shatter the silence, and I swear I hear a whispered plea leaving the man’s lips. My eyes never leave him as I lean back to whisper to Rebecca.

He took my hand and pulled me behind him. We pushed through the crowd toward the commotion. The scene outside stopped my heart. Vivian Gray lay crumpled on the ground, her white dress soaked with blood. Her body jerked once, twice, then went still. And standing over her, knife in hand, was Vincent.

"God, you are so selfish, Jim. You won't lend him a cent, and on top of that, you keep slinging mud at him right in front of me!" Blaire let out a bitter laugh. "I've known him for years. Don't you think I know him better than you do?" I tasted nothing but bitterness beneath the metallic tang of blood in my mouth. 'Blaire... I've explained this to you so many times. Couldn't you just believe me once?' I thought. A few passersby rushed over. One of them immediately called 911, while another pressed down hard on my wounds to stem the bleeding. People close in, voices rising, bodies pressing. Sophia and Elara reach me first. They push people back and kneel beside me. My head throbs, deep and steady, like a drumbeat starting behind my eyes.

The world is red and black and white under the harsh light of the streetlamp. There are men on the ground, their bodies mangled lying in unnatural positions. I cannot tell if they are breathing. Pulling the edges of my sweater back around my nakedness, I see nothing but blood, splattered all over my front, my legs.
