COLD STEEL, BLEEDING HEARTS
Julian leaned out the window, his face twisted with worry.
“The ice is too thin!” he yelled. “The heat’s too much! Get off the ice, Maya!”
“I can’t!” she yelled back, but she doubted he could hear her over the storm.
She finally reached the edge of the rig. The air was thick, hot, and steamy. Hard to breathe, hard to see. She jammed her skates into the ice, spraying water everywhere, but her bad leg buckled. She crashed, sliding until her cast slammed into the metal base with a heavy thud.
