Nicola Taylor It was the 24th of December, and the house was filled with glee and noise as we gathered for a small Christmas party with just close friends and their kids. The holiday lights twinkled softly, and the smell of gingerbread cookies drifted through the air. Lucas and I were in the bedroom, helping Cole get into his Santa costume, sharing a moment of laughter at his misery. “I can’t believe you actually got him to do this. This is amazing,” Lucas said, grinning ear to ear as he recorded the whole thing on his phone, zooming in on Cole’s unamused expression.

Once upon a time, there was a wolf who thought she was nothing special. However, a lucid nightmare would change everything she knew a couple of days before her eighteenth birthday. This nightmare was not just a dream but a premonition of the destruction of her pack. The night of her eighteenth birthday was supposed to be a joyous occasion filled with opportunity. Instead, the night was filled with fire and carnage. Her Alpha, Beta, and pack members were struck down in their prime. The remainder of the pack members and her became rogues.

December of the fourth year arrived differently from the three that had preceded it. The first December had been the Christmas corporate event — the professional performance, the managed distance, the candlelight look across four seats at the dinner table that had lasted four seconds and that Ernest had carried to bed. The second December had been the sitting room fire. The third December had been the planning application and Grace's visit and the bread baked a day early and the frost in the garden and Christmas without armour.

I have never trusted December. People say that sounds dramatic, but those people never watched their parents’ house burn down on Christmas Eve while the rest of the town kept singing carols like nothing happened. So yes,every time snow falls, my skin crawls. And tonight, on December 1st, Hallowpine is drowning in it. Snowflakes tumble from the sky like they’re drunk on holiday spirit, sticking to my eyelashes as I lock up my bakery. Sugar & Sin,the name sounds cute until you realize the only sugar inside is the kind I dump into coffee to survive this town.

As soon as we got back from Thanksgiving break, the school was as lively as it could possibly be. There was something about the month of December that just screamed happiness, excitement, and romance. It was evident inside school halls too. For example, before lunchtime today, I had witnessed two girls ask out their dates to the dance. It was very cute. One girl made a cute poster sign and the other one sang a song on her ukulele.

"He just likes to tease." "Well, you both be careful driving home." Jocelyn opened the door for them and cold air rushed in, chilling Jocelyn to the bone. She almost went back for her coat, but knew she would only be out for a moment. Jocelyn never tired of the landscape. A blanket of crisp, white snow glistened in the sunlight. In the center of town was the square, where the gazebo set, decorated with colorful Christmas lights, along with the rest of the town. It was only three weeks until Christmas, the busiest time of year for Christmas Cove. At night, it would become a Christmas wonderland, complete with Santa Claus in the gazebo, listening to the wishes of children.

"But I tell you what. I'll give you today. One of my brothers is having a party tonight - I'll go, alone, just like I planned. Tomorrow we'll talk. Is that okay?" "Isn't tomorrow Christmas morning?" He'd be busy with his family then - they wouldn't be able to talk. And she'd be at the shelter, playing elf with Jana. "Check the calendar, baby. Seems the magic pulled a fast one on us."
