The soft groan of wood rang out in the quiet bookstore as Lena turned over the last sign on the door: **CLOSED**. Outside, the city drew a breath, illuminated by amber streetlights and the quiet rumble of passing cars. Within, the world held its breath. Warm. Intimate. Holy.

I was so over this crap, I just wanted Charlie back in my arms, it was horrible with her being so far away “You are supposed to be my brother, do you not want to help me?” “It’s not that I don’t want to help, I just think we might be falling into a trap” Kayla comes quickly into the office carrying a large book, she looks flustered as she slams the open book down on the table sending bits of dust everywhere and making me cough. Kayla apologises and asks if we have heard about the one to rule them all. I look at Alexander and he looks just as puzzled as me “What do you mean the one to rule them all?”

Inside the Archive, the shelves moved with my breath. I passed by a book bound in velvet dusk. Its title: The First Time You Chose Softness Over Safety. Another: How You Loved When No One Was Looking. I reached for a third. It burned with light before revealing its name: What You Became When You Stopped Trying to Be Understood. I wept then—not from pain, but from reunion. The guide touched my shoulder. “There’s one more,” they said. They led me to a door I hadn’t noticed.

"You're the best, honey. I'll add you into the group. Once you clear his name, you can apologize where everyone can see it. So…" I cut her off. "Don't even think about it." She froze. The tender expression she had a moment ago vanished, replaced by exasperation. "We're innocent, Quincy! Why do you keep going after him? This rumor can very well ruin his life. He's just an intern straight out of college. The poor boy was crying his eyes out on the phone!" I shot up from my seat and met her eyes.

’’ When I gave a frantic shake of my head, he smiled even wider as if he intended to tease me even more. ‘‘Or perhaps we should pick one about your father…’’ he raised an eyebrow, shoving his hands into his jeans pockets. ‘‘I’m sure it’s somewhere inside the shelf, too…’’ ‘‘Alex, don’t you dare!’’ But he already looked through the books once more, and I heaved a heavy sigh when I saw a book entitled William Maxwell: Zero to One. Wow! From the title itself, I could tell that dad started from zero when he built his business.

So I decide to reach over and grab the frame when, "Stop." His voice is soft, or maybe not. I simply can't tell because he's so close that I feel not only his breath on my neck, but his hand on my hand. I freeze and I think he does too. We stay in that position for what feels like an eternity. It's like time stopped and all that remains is our loud and in-sync breaths. His body radiates so much warmth that I didn't realize how cold I was. "Is that you?"
