At the year-end company meeting, I was announcing the bonuses when a new employee suddenly raised her hand. "Over at the other company, they handed out two boxes of imported cherries at their annual party," she said, shaking her phone. "And we only get performance bonuses?" The video, maliciously edited, went viral online and hit the trending list the very next day. I had the finance department cancel all the year-end bonus transfers. "If cherries are what really count as a gesture of goodwill," I said, "then this year's year-end benefit will be cherries—fifty boxes per person." When they saw the mountain of cherries piling up before them, the employees who had once joined in mocking me panicked instantly. One by one, they cried and apologized, begging me to reconsider.

No one wanted to fly all the way to an island to spend time with colleagues. However, what the internet did not know was that our company's team-building tradition involved booking a top-notch five-star resort every year: all-inclusive, family-friendly, with an extra three days of paid leave, and a $30,000 budget per person. The whole internet dubbed me a cold-blooded capitalist, so I decided to give in to their demands and issued a notice. Long-time employees gathered at my office door, pleading for the return of the sunny Madiles retreat.

"Bu, aku bisa pinjam uang dua ratus ribu buat modal usaha?" ucapku pada ibu mertua. "Kamu hanya tamat SMP bisa apa? Sekarang ke dapur dan kerjakan semua pekerjaan rumah!" Semenjak suamiku kecelakaan dan kakinya diamputasi, kami diperlakukan terhina seperti pembantu. Kehilangan pekerjaan seperti benalu di rumah ibu kandungnya. Hinaan dari keluarga suami bagaikan makanan sehari-hari. Akan tetapi, jika terus berusaha dan belajar, tak ada yang tidak mungkin. Begitulah yang aku lakukan hingga bisa menulis novel online di beberapa aplikasi, sehingga menghasilkan banyak uang. Bagaimana sikap mereka yang menghina setelah tahu aku punya penghasilan sendiri dengan kondisi hanya tamat SMP?
