Opening The Books Novels & Stories

The other two idiots hadn't passed me anything yet, so I am rushing some books before the two idiots passed theirs. I open our shared drive and open the folder where all the books are lined up to be evaluated and after I open it. My eyes widen. What a fucking day. Before I could overthink it, I reached inside and carefully lifted out one of the thick, leather-bound books. Its weight alone suggested centuries of knowledge rested within its pages. My heart hammered with anticipation as I opened the cover. Every page was blank. I returned it to the shelf, grabbed another, and flipped through it just as quickly. Blank. One after another, I pulled every book from the cabinet, desperately flipping through their pages. They were all thick, heavy with promise, yet empty inside. I opened the last book carelessly, already expecting nothing. I let out an exasperated groan.

But no ledger. Damn it. I pivoted to the shelves next, scanning quickly. The books were arranged neatly, except— There. A thick, black leather-bound book sat slightly out of place, its spine worn from use. My fingers curled around it, and I flipped it open, my eyes skimming over the pages. Names. Transactions. Locations. Everything Adriano wanted. Got it. Relief flooded my chest, but I didn’t have time to savor it. Just as I turned to leave, I heard footsteps.

I looked up again, paranoid that some person would walk in even though I had locked the door and no person would be able to enter. I looked back down and hurriedly took out the books before I began to page through them. I have never been so glad to be able to read as I am at this moment, or else it would have been futile for me to even be prying. I opened the first leather bound book and found it to be a book on receipts of payments. I paged through it to make sure, and was met with the same thing with each turn of the page. I closed the book and moved on to the next. I was met with more receipt books recording payments made for me.

Looking down at the key in his hand, he turned the combination to the first number, then the next and the last. A loud click and the door popped up.
