AS WE WALKED, DIFFERENT types of Invent’s and my creatures scurried under our feet. They were monstrous creatures that were part human, animal, and machine. They use the maze to travel to the outside. I even once tried to follow them and use their exit. The second I got within a couple of feet of the tunnels, they went in and out; they attacked me. I got a couple of scars from that experience, so I avoided them after that.

I looked up and my stomach dropped. Aziel Nightbane. The monster himself. His golden eyes burned down at me with pure hate. Up close he smelled like blood and smoke and something darker that made my wolf stir. “Who are you running from boy?” he growled. His voice was low and rough like gravel under boots. His grip tightened on my arm hard enough to bruise. I gasped for air and forced words out even though my throat felt tight. “Please. I am nothing. Just a slave omega. Let me go and I will disappear. You will never see me again I swear it.”

“You’re safe from other monsters.” My quickened pulse returned. “Other monsters? Are you a monster? Is Em?”

“If there’s a single scratch on my body, the entire Chicago would know what kind of monsters you all are.” “When the time comes, you will meet our monsters first,” I snarled. “Keep your empty threats to yourself, Dominic.” She narrowed her eyes. “They don’t scare me anymore; in fact, it’s boring and repetitive.” “If there’s anything worth remembering about you, Sophia, that is, you are an attention-seeking whore. We know the video is fake, and you are desperate. Get to the fucking point. NOW!”

“I didn’t get the chance to thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank me? You kissed me without my permission,” she whispered. “You scared me. And now—now you’re here? Why? What do you want from me?” The corner of his mouth tilted, almost amused. “So you know who I am.” “You’re Adriano Greco,” she said, her voice trembling. “The monster people talk about.” He took another step closer. “Monster?” he repeated softly. “That’s what they call me?”

The currents become violent, twisting in every direction. Creatures emerge from the dark two-headed sea lions, toads swollen and deformed, eels with human teeth. They're possessed. I summon my mirror blaze and shards of reflective blade slice through the water. While Morien scorches the possessed animals with dragon fire that doesn’t quench, even underwater. They surround us, but we fight through it, burning, cutting and clawing forward until we destroy them. Then the sea stills and the waters split apart dry land forming in the middle. At its center there's a dark rock and buried in it is the sword.

And yet the horrors before them eclipsed the storm’s violence. The frog-monster let out another guttural croak that vibrated in Jonah’s bones, its bulbous eyes rolling grotesquely as ichor spilled from its torn underbelly. Smaller creatures crawled along its flanks—centipede-like abominations with human hands for mandibles, and eyeless wolf carcasses reanimated by dark magic. Silas’s breath hitched. “Gods above…” “Don’t freeze now.” Jonah’s tone was sharp, masking his own fear. “We don’t have time.”
