The forest path smells wrong. Roselyn's boots crunch over frost as she walks beside Pete through the dense pine woods bordering Fang territory. The scent of decay and wet earth should be normal for a Friday afternoon in the Pacific Northwest, but something metallic and sharp cuts through the air, making Cicilia stir uneasily in her mind. Pete is talking about the upcoming marking ceremony, his voice smooth and reassuring, but Roselyn can't focus on his words.

He looked up with a grim nod. “She’s just ahead.” The scent followed—iron, scorched herbs, decay. Unmistakable. It curled through the forest like a snake, invasive and wrong.
