He started to shake harder, grabbing at his head.

“Ah,” the Game Master breathed, smiling wider. “There it is.”
He dropped to his knees again, gasping, muttering something over and over that didn’t make sense.
The Game Master stood back up, its voice carrying easily through the room.
“Do you understand now?” it asked, spreading its arms. “This isn’t heaven. This isn’t hell. You’re in between — where the unremarkable, the wasted, and the undeserving come to prove themselves.”
