The spray hits me so completely and so suddenly that for a full two seconds I just stand there — arms out, dripping, staring at the very satisfied retriever who is now wagging his tail at me like he's done me a favor. "Oscar," I say. My voice comes out absolutely betrayed. "Did you plan that?" I hear it before I see it. Adam laughs. It's not a polite sound. It's not a controlled-public-appearance sound. It's the laugh of someone who has been caught completely off guard by something genuinely, helplessly funny — a real laugh, low and unguarded and startling in its warmth, like a room you didn't know was locked swinging suddenly open. I turn and look at him.

“Then fucking try it.” Owen laughs so hard he nearly spills his whiskey. “Relax. Relax. I’m just saying, since she doesn’t want you—” “I’ll chain her down before I let you try anything.” He stops laughing long enough to stare at me, then he nods dramatically and fakes a shiver. “Ouch. That’s really more like Reign Conner. Jeez. Who the fuck thinks of chaining their mate?” “Someone who’s losing his mind,” I mutter under my breath, though I’m not sure if he hears.

Seb snickered, highly amused. “Next time, you can rip your top off,” Owen grumbled. “I look like I have a sweat gland problem.” “Not me, man,” Seb chortled. “I am going for the Velcro sided pants rip off move.”

“You're right. I almost forgot. Thank you, Max. You have reminded me even though you do not worship me like you worship Homer.” While Owen had been silent, he was curious. He watched the two of them until he didn't realize that he was drowning in the assumptions in his head. Until Max accidentally elbowed Owen because he couldn't hold back his laughter Max couldn’t help it because Jefferson kicked Hugo, and his foot hit the chair; it was instant karma. Owen's thoughts were shattered, and he yelped at Max.

Like a child’s laugh. A child’s laugh… That wasn’t soft or quiet. The best ones were loud and raucous, with no care for who overheard them. Owen always ducked his head when he laughed, until his brother started to laugh, too, and then he’d let go, more confident with Ares doubling over with ridiculous glee at his side. Owen. Ares. My boys. They were who I had to get back to, and they were all I had to hold on to.

Oh, the joys of living with these guys. "Man, you should've seen the rack on that girl, Owen. It would have totally turned that frown of yours upside down," Tim says out of character. God help them both. Rocky chimes in, trying to lighten the mood, "Hey, hockey players are allowed to joke around too, right? I mean lord knows you guys need it with all that fist fighting on the ice." Tim shoves Rocky away, clearly not wanting to be caught in the crossfire as he keeps his distance from Owen. Though he's already a hair's ball away from getting punched.

I bit my lips to suppress the pained groan about to escape them. Shawn yelled loudly, “Alright, alright, you win! What do you want?” “Now, that's more like it!” Justin Xane chuckled with satisfaction. “Do you really think I’d sit behind and watch you triumph with your stupid new gadget?” The goon whom Shawn had called Sunny answered. “Nah. He wasn't that foolish. He was expecting a move from you but just trusted me with it.” “Does that not make him more of a moron?” Justin Xane turned to the guy and they all burst out mockingly laughing at Shawn yet again.

He mocks me, and I let my menu slump surrendering. Pressing my tongue to my teeth, I shake my head. “Yeah, yeah. Mock me all you want.” Conversation with Owen is easy. Damn, everything with him seems so easy and not complicated as he seems as easygoing as they come. After having eaten, and shared a waffle dessert with ice cream, I can’t seem to feel my face anymore. My stomach hurts at how much I have been laughing, and the worst thing is that we also find something we have in common.

I didn’t even hesitate as I swiped and brought the phone to my ear. Her voice slipped through, light at first until she started laughing hysterically. “What’s so funny, Olivia?” I asked, letting the smirk carry into my voice. She kept wheezing, trying to catch her breath. “F–fuck,” she finally managed, still giggling between breaths. “I lost it when I saw the briefcase and the dead-face emoji. What was that even for?” I smiled as I leaned my head back against the seat, watching the city blur past the tinted glass.

George yelled. "What did you say?!" Owen demanded. "That's fucked up bro, that's fucked up," George muttered looking concerned. Owen shook his head furiously, "It's crazy but funny as hell." he laughed. They both started laughing, George slapped Owen on the back and then pulled him up in a tight hug. "Oh my god bro," George whispered. "Yeah, so funny." I murmured angrily. "I'm sorry man, but it's hilarious, I should thank her for stressing you out." They kept laughing.
