Chapter 15 On our way home, the rain began falling. It was quite heavy and the roads soon turned to waterways, making it very slippery and stuff, so we had to drive very slowly. But it wasn't long before we met with a traffic jam, which used to be very common once the rains started pouring. But this one was different because it wasn't moving at all. I glanced at Vera and she just kept staring out the window. I sighed and focused ahead. Soon an ambulance passed by us and I got confused. What was happening?

‘What is that Mama? ‘I don’t know,’ I said. ‘Maybe there’s a big fire accident nearby.’ I pulled out my mobile phone from the pocket of my shorts and took a photo of the huge dark smoke. ‘Mama, look up.’ I looked up and witnessed that it was raining, although it is not the common rain I knew. Rather than water it is raining with very small and dark particles. Tiny rough dark colored ashes fall down from the sky. I noticed the grass which covered the ground is now partially filled with ashes. I also observed that the white bench from where we sat is now stained with dark ashes.

"Let's go home." Jung-Hoon nodded and opened the door for Syanja so they could leave. As soon as they stepped outside he noticed that it was raining. The sky was dark and stormy and rain was pouring down heavily. "Shit." he muttered before quickly running to the car, opening the door for Syanja so she could get inside. Syanja laughed lightly and got into the car. When Jung Hoon closed the door he started the car and began driving off. "Jung-Hoon, I want to enjoy in rain." she said after a couple minutes.

Hazel trudged along the wet pavement, her school bag heavy on her shoulders as the rain poured down relentlessly. The sky was a dark shade of gray, and the sound of raindrops hitting the ground filled the air. Hazel's hair was plastered to her face, and her clothes clung to her skin, soaked through by the downpour. As she walked, Hazel couldn't help but feel a sense of frustration. She had forgotten to bring an umbrella that morning, thinking that the weather forecast had predicted a sunny day. But now, she was regretting her oversight as she battled against the elements on her way home from school.

Outside the damaged vehicle… Footsteps approached slowly through the rain.

He hated more that he had not thrown it away. On the fourth night, rain came down hard and fast. The kind that soaked through shoes and made the sidewalks shine like glass. Jamie stood under the awning outside the café, waiting for the bus that was already late, water dripping from his hair onto the collar of his jacket. He pulled the paper out and stared at it. “This is stupid,” he muttered. The bus did not come. He texted. Jamie: You said I didn’t have to use this. The reply came almost immediately.

I flinch whenever I hear the deafening roar of thunder and James keeps asking if I'm okay. I'm not. Outside, the forms of pedestrians are running helter skelter, some of them have trays on their heads and some are lucky enough to find a place to stand and wait the ran out. The road is quickly getting flooded, the gutters are pouring out into the road. Some people are parking their cars. The sky is weeping.

Racing through the parking lot, I dodge as many puddles as I can. I swear it started raining a month ago and hasn't let up. Even worse, it's muggy. Really muggy. But that's what early June in Houston is like every year. At least the rain is keeping the bugs away for now. "Shit," I yell as I accidentally land right in a puddle. I look up and see Mari's elderly neighbors staring at me and my filthy mouth. "Sorry. I landed in a puddle."

The beams of light reflect off the rain-soaked road, creating a glistening, slippery surface that adds an extra layer of caution to his journey. The windshield wipers work tirelessly, sweeping back and forth, desperately trying to clear away the cascading raindrops. Yet, despite their efforts, the downpour persists, obscuring visibility and heightening the sense of isolation. His focus intensifies as he strains to make out the road signs and landmarks through the rain-splattered glass. Every turn, every curve in the road becomes an exercise in trust and intuition, as he relies on his instincts to guide him through the storm.

"Here, have some coffee first." The two happily accepted the coffee and drank it while waiting for the rain to subside. But it didn't stop until ten o'clock, instead, it got even heavier. "How are we going to go home now?" There were worries in Haria's voice. "Don't even try to go home with that heavy rain. The road was dangerous and muddy. You might get hurt," Haria's grandmother warned when she heard what her granddaughter said. "Grandma's right, Haria. Let's just wait for the rain to subside before we go home," Jacob agreed.
