“Do you accept the burden of Luna—not as decoration, but as shield?” Her voice did not tremble. “I accept.” The elder nodded solemnly. The simple silver tiara was gently removed from her head. For a moment, her hair fell freely around her shoulders. Then another elder stepped forward holding the crown. It was not subtle. Large. Diamond-studded. Silver and white gold intertwined like vines, the central stone catching the moonlight in a blaze of brilliance. A symbol not of beauty—but of power. As it was lowered onto her head, a murmur rippled through the gathered crowd.

“We regret the haste.” Alina met her gaze steadily. “Then leave.” Elowen smiled thinly. “We cannot.” Cael shifted half a step forward. Elowen’s eyes flicked to him. “Captain.” He did not answer. The clerics moved past Elowen and toward the center of the sanctuary, where a low stone table had been hastily cleared. One of them carried a covered object wrapped in thick cloth. Alina’s chest tightened. The Crown. Not the symbol the court liked to display, polished and framed by banners, but the true thing. The Ember Crown, modest and unassuming, dangerous precisely because it refused spectacle.

The crowns were beautiful; they were the same; there was no difference between the crowns. The crowns were also unique; everyone’s crown was either gold or silver, but this one was gold with rubies, emeralds, and lovely-looking gemstones on it. The crown was elegant and powerful.
