I was feeling a bit tired because of the playful banter and bonding I had with my parents earlier. After we finished watching, I let out a yawn. I glanced up at the wall clock and only then noticed that it was already past midnight. “You better sleep now, Babe. You woke up earlier this morning, and it’s already midnight.” Kyle gently stroked my hair. I slowly nodded my head. “Okay. Thank you for this day, Babe. You don’t know how much you made me happy.” “I’m glad that I made my princess happy.” He adjusted his seating position and turned to me. “Alright, I’ll leave now, so you can rest too.”

I asked her, raising an eyebrow. It was a little past 11:00 P.M. when her bedtime was 8:30 P.M. unless she was doing something with family. She was the type that could fall asleep not long after her head hit the pillow. Not to mention that she could fall asleep anywhere and everywhere. Brynn and I definitely envied her for that. “I missed you and Momma. I wanted to make sure you were okay. Are they gone now and can’t find me?” she asked, her bottom lip quivering a bit.

Stay. I go back to bed.

We chatted until midnight before everyone finally headed to bed. Tomorrow was Sunday, and I planned to prepare everything I’d need so I wouldn’t be caught off guard. I went to bed that night feeling lighter and happier than I had in years. I looked at the photos of my parents on my bedside table. “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll pay off Dad’s debt so your spirit can finally rest in peace. And you too, Dad… even though you’re the one who got us into this mess in the first place,” I whispered with a small smile, then closed my eyes.

They both nodded satisfied and with huge smiles that made me deny, then left. I opened my eyes tiredly and checked the time automatically, it was five minutes to ten o'clock in the morning, which not only told me that I slept too much, but also brought out a silly smile at my perfect punctuality. My phone rang and I frowned as I didn't recognize the call number. "Are you ready?" Luc asked, and his voice completely lulled me to sleep. "No, and I won't go out with you," I said sleepily and hung up.

She climbed on her bed and I covered her up with the bedcover. I walked towards Joshua. He is busy with his iPad. He is so obsessed. But it is past his bedtime. He needs to sleep. "Um, Joshua," i called. He didn't respond but kept playing his game. I heaved a sigh. "Joshua, it is past your bedtime. You have to go to sleep." I said with my usual calm tone. "I am not sleepy." He said without looking at me. "But ..." He tutted, bringing down his iPad. "You have to wait for me to feel sleepy before you leave. Mum said you should make sure we sleep before you go back to the quarters." He said and covered his face back with the iPad.

It was now midnight judging from the watch that Trei gave us that we have yet to return. I lay on my bed and stared at the ceiling. It was a long day yesterday but I couldn’t find myself going back to bed. My nightmares were getting worst that I would rather be awake than asleep at most nights.

I told them how proud I was and I really meant it when I gave them a hug and a kiss before bedtime. More than that—I was proud of myself. ~ Wine. Pajamas. A couch I didn’t have to share with guilt anymore. I curled into the cushions, remote in hand, flipping through channels like a normal person on a normal evening. Peace. Finally, Until it wasn’t. “—and now breaking news just in from Washington—” My thumb paused mid-click.

DUNCAN POV It was after 10 pm when I padded to my bedroom barefooted, after putting the kids to sleep. The little energy balls were so handful, but after wrestling with them for quite some time, sleep finally claimed their souls and I was able to leave their bedrooms. I was happy. Matter of fact, ecstatic is the word for it.

We danced to the last song ‘Asia Cruise - Selfish’ when our feet ached, people were leaving, and we realised it was four in the morning. I snuck in my front door and tiptoed up to bed. It was weird to open my bedroom door and see the bed empty. I hadn’t slept here without Layton for a while now. But feeling too tired and a little drunk, I unsteadily got undressed as I bumped into my desk and my cupboard. I finally slumped into bed, sending Layton a goodnight text before I drifted off into a deep sleep.
