That had been the one and only time Patty knew of that the entire town pulled together. Carter and Patty had been beat up by Marty’s henchman, Ghost. Patty would never forget that night she was working at the switchboard. She had just got off the radio with the fire department in the next county when she saw Ghost’s reflection in the glass behind her. She screamed for Carter and reached for the panic button, but Ghost was too fast for her. The last thing she remembered was a foot flying up to her face.

When they had arrived at the station, Jodi wasn’t walking fast enough for Marty, so he scooped her up in the parking lot and carried her in. The rookie and Patty were knocked out cold when they had arrived. The pale man, who Jodi learned later was called Ghost, was walking down the hall towards them. He had on an orange jumpsuit. The conversation played out in Jodi’s mind. “I told you, Paul. Ghost got captured because he wanted to be. He already took care of the pests,” Marty bragged as he held Jodi in his arms. “You have time to figure out which office is Kirby’s?”

“You heard me.” I blinked. “The fuck I am.” “You will,” he said, tone flat. “Or Ghost drags your ass back to the strip club .” “You have arms. Use them.” He exhaled through his nose. Slow. “I don’t need my arms, ragazza. I need obedience.” My skin prickled. Ghost wasn’t here. He’d left hours ago to go get Pietro. The hacker. The weird one. The one who kept giving me looks like he wanted to bite me and cry about it after.

Paul was my butler. I pulled my hand away and turned to leave with Chloe's urn. Then something slammed into my back. Pain shot through me. I lost my balance and crashed to the ground. The urn slipped from my hands. "No!" I lunged for it. But before I could reach it, a foot kicked it away. "Bad woman! You bullied my mommy! I hate you!" David. The urn hit the ground. The lid popped off. Ashes scattered everywhere. My heart stopped.

Once he was no longer needed, Pete joined Melody in holding vigil at the window. They said nothing, but each was well aware of the difference in the behavior of a few of the spirits that wandered the charred earth. Not only were they looking more alert and becoming more animated, but they were starting to speak with each other. Pete was relieved to see that it was only a small portion of the spirits that were coming to life, but it was still enough to worry him. If bullets didn’t work on them, what were they supposed to use if those devils decided to attack? Harold’s vicious end would be embedded in his mind forever.

The office felt too small with all of us inside, Ciara’s brothers, Salvatore, Wolf leaning against the wall, arms crossed, eyes sharp. Ciara stood beside me, her presence grounding even with the tension still humming between us from the hallway. The door opened, and Wolf stepped in, guiding Ghost forward like he was herding a distracted kid. Ghost had three phones in his hands, two cords hanging from his pocket, and a look on his face that said he hadn’t slept in… ever.

“All patrols will be paired. No wolf—no matter rank—goes anywhere alone. Patrol routes will rotate daily. Border lines will shift every hour. We adapt. We survive. That is how Blackwater has always lived.” Lucas stepped forward then, voice smooth. “We will circulate rosters within the hour. Report any suspicious activity directly to Alpha or myself.” I watched the pack absorb his presence like a balm, watched trust settle back into their shoulders. And for the first time, I hated that reaction. I hated that I couldn’t trust what they trusted. He was acting exactly like the Beta I’d always known. So why did something smell wrong? He heard a clinking sound, and could make out several feet away from them, a dark figure moving rapidly. It was a wolf, maybe the thickest possible one he had ever seen. He had heard that, but it still caused him no worry.

Marcus, the quiet guy from accounting leaned against the door, arms crossed, with a bitter smirk twisting his lips. “McAllen,” he said. “You’ve been looking real happy lately. I see you enjoy your late night with the boss.” My stomach dropped. “What the hell are you talking about?” He stepped closer, I could see the jealousy in his eyes. “ I saw you leaving the private elevator. Looking like a man whose ass has taken some cock. You’re not the first, you know. The Ghost destroys anyone who tries to get close. You’re just the latest toy.” “The Ghost?” I laughed it off, but my voice sounded shaky even to me. “Sounds like some movie legend bullshit.”

" Wow! It doesn't seem like she can see ghosts hmm. Yes she can see ghosts but she doesn’t want to tell to other people about that. "But you can see ghost duh!” I said with full of sarcasm. "Yep. If it's a real ghost, and are you scared in ghosts? Opps.. you’re a ghoster remember?" And my crazy friend laughed as if she wasn't a ghoster too. "Wow am I the only ghoster here? You too" I muttered to her. "Hmm Aeshe whats the feeling of being ghosted?” she asked me out of nowhere. "Did you see the guys who cry when we are leaving them? And to see a guy crying with just a week of flirting with them it would have been a lot of pain that it caused them to cry like that." I said to her.
