His fur sizzled with smoke and a burnt patch of fur was under his jaw. He shook himself and the fur fell to the ground, turning to cinders. The pendant wouldn't let him touch it. His eyes glowed bright as he tried to heal the patch but it didn't work. He looked at me angrily and charged. He was faster than lightning– the Sapphire was enhancing his speed–and I had no idea when he smacked me with his paw. I felt a bone in my neck crack and I was on the floor. In a blur, all I could see were paws and claws going at my skin, tearing my fur and ripping my flesh.

I crouch down and pull his hands away. He glances up at me and I notice it’s Marcel, the Head Warrior Scar, son. “Marcel sweetie, why are you out here crying? Don’t you know it’s dangerous to be alone in the woods?” He nods his head and wipes away his tears on his arm, “I’m sowi, I no do it gain.” He apologises and I nod. I pick Marcel up and put him on my side, “It’s fine sweetie, as long as you don’t do it again.”

I want to look around, to see if the rest of the pack came with him, but I can’t tear my gaze away from him driving the other wolf away from me. As third in the pack, Marshall is one of the best fighters we have, whether human or wolf. He fights silently. He doesn’t growl or snarl the way the intruder does, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t furious. I feel the lash of his rage as he snaps his teeth and uses every ounce of coiled muscle to attack. Marshall doesn’t hold back. In seconds he has the black-brown wolf pinned and goes for his throat.
