Without thinking twice, they both tell me, “Come on. You lead the way.”
“Behind the left wall, among the bushes.”
We approach slowly when Alec alerts us, “Be careful. This sector is full of traps. Surely the pup must have fallen into one.”
“But why was he here?” Eric asks, confused.
“Hush.” I tell them both. “I hear something.” We hear the cries of a small child.
“Anyone here? Hello? I won’t hurt you.”
“In–in–here! Please–please, help–help me.”
Alec tells me, “This way, dear. Be careful.” They clear some bushes, and see a four-year-old pup, with his leg trapped in a climbing plant. I approach slowly, sniffing the air, and I realize immediately that it is a rogue pup.
