I intended to show them the pack lands, but he has started pacing in my head, practically desperate to hunt her. I toss Piper a towel and a bottle of water. “You are incredible, my mate,” I say, kissing her. “Thank you,” she says, grinning. Her face is flushed but her eyes are bright and she looks happy. Very happy. It makes me happy. “Excuse me, Luna?” I look down to see the young pup who is tapping on Piper’s thigh. “Carrie-Ann, don’t bother Alpha Piper,” her mother says walking over. “It’s no bother,” Piper says, crouching down in front of the pup. She’s only four. “What can I do for you, sweetheart?”

“The stronger the wolf, the more mates they can sustain bonds with. Four mates means you’re much more powerful than anyone knows.” Despite the indignation that coursed through me—having a fourth mate felt like a curse, not a blessing—part of me was curious about what this mysterious fourth mate might be like. Was he another cocky asshole like Lucas? Another brooding jerk like Rowan? Or something else entirely? But mostly, I just hoped I never ran into him. Three mates were already more trouble than I knew what to do with. “Can we continue training?” I asked. “I want to get stronger so I can figure out how to deal with the Elders.”

At least the fucking car was full. "Guess he set up new patrols to monitor everyone's movements. We never did figure out who was involved with Dominique. So I understand. But fucking hell, can't they smell it is me? Or even fucking see it? Who else has this color hair?" It was an off-handed joke that got a chuckle out of Quintez. But his eyes trailed to the wolves following us. Who kept perfect pace beside the car. Some of their tongues hung out of their mouths. Some stopped running, only for another wolf to replace him out of the shadows. They were a trained pack. Killers.

Ciaran laughed loudly and sat up. "Dude! She thought you were older than Dargan! Time to change your skin cream!" Teagan hollered, unable to hold herself back. Ozias' face darkened. Enough that I knew he was coming up with his own insult at Teagan. The revving of a car engine had him pause. We all looked towards the window. Maverick's Jeep Wrangler drove in, crunching the first fallen leaves of the looming autumn. Another passenger rode beside him. Black hair shimmered as Maverick parked just beside the front door. I could feel my heart jump into a race. Hammered my ribs in anger. Irritation.

I will always be by her side until she's one day mortal, I promised her that." Holly winced at his words. "Eros?" she whispered at his shoulder. The last remaining guard starts to plead for his life, and it finally occurs to me why I thought I recognized him. "Wait! I called out and Trent stops but doesn’t move from looking at him, "that's Piper's brother." The loud bang that followed has me clutching my ears as someone picks me up and half throws me into the back of the vehicle. I scramble to get out, but the door is closed and it’s useless to try to open it. I press up against a small opening, as if there’s a way I can squeeze through the tiny open window that divides the back and the front of the vehicle.

For the first time in days, I felt a tiny spark of connection, a small moment of feeling seen and heard. "Thank you," I whispered. "That means more than you know." We talked for a while, about nothing and everything. He told me about the pack, about his duties as Gamma, about his mate and their plans for the future. He was easy to talk to, uncomplicated, and I found myself relaxing in a way I hadn't expected. Then Matt's phone rang. He glanced at the screen, and his face went pale. "Sorry, I have to take this," he said, stepping away from the table.
