“What the hell was that?!” Clementine snapped, already on her feet, her eyes blazing red now—feral, protective, wolf at the edge of breaking through.
I jumped up too, my heart pounding hard enough to rattle my ribs. That’s when I saw him—a pup, tiny, no more than four years of age, tossed to the ground by the shockwave. His mother scrambled toward him, fear wild in her stance. I moved before I even thought, scooping him up into my arms, his whimpers clawing at me. I pressed him back into his mother’s shaking hands. “Quickly, take him to the safe spot. Tell the others!”
