I demanded, my hand suspended on the door handle of my study. "It's Heather." She informed me in a panicked tone, my fingers unconsciously clenched into a tight fists at the mention of Heather. Darius rested a hand on Penelope's shoulder trying to calm her down, she was usually very level-headed during times of panic, which was why I felt uneasy. "What happened to her?" At this time, my words came out in an uneven mix of anger and worry. "Someone has been feeding off of her!" Penelope screeched in a tone that gave me a clear enough picture of just how gruesome the situation was.

Seph is a wonderful pet, and I thought the girls would appreciate a pet like her. “They also seem to be adjusting well to life here. When I passed by the other day, some guy came over to see Pen. His head is tilted down, his lips practically brushing her ear as he whispers something to her. Penelope is smiling. It is not the small, terrified smile she used to give me when I entered the dining room. It is a brilliant, radiant expression that makes her look completely untouchable. She looks like a queen who has finally taken her throne. I stare at the digital image until the screen goes dark. I spent three years breaking her body and her spirit to please a ghost from my past. Now, she belongs to a man who can destroy my entire lineage with a single command from his pack council.

She arched a brow as she scribbled her signature on one of the documents. “And from the marks and hickeys on your neck,” she added, smirking, “I’m pretty sure the days we didn’t see you in the office, you were having the best time of your life.” I rolled my eyes, leaning back. “Wow, you can roll your eyes now? Penelope is really rubbing off on you.” “You need to find your mate, Freya. Then you’ll understand.” Her glare was sharp, but behind it was a flicker of pain. “No thanks. He—or she—is probably dead after all this while.” She said it like it meant nothing, but her eyes betrayed her.

Penelope’s scent is overwhelming now that she is officially 18 and my wolf is desperate to mark her. I have a meeting this morning, but hopefully after that I’ll be done and able to cherish her for the rest of the day. Pete was half an hour late for the meeting. Chapter 29 - Pretend Penelope I felt like I was in a dream, one I never wanted to wake up from. The air in Kailani smelt so crisp and fresh that it felt like I was breathing for the first time. The flowers were so bright and full of life as they danced in the breeze, moving with such grace as the birds above us sang a beautiful melody. I felt as if I had just entered a painting.
