There was no amount of concealer to hide the shadows around those eyes and I had my hair pulled back in a bun so tight it was hurting me. I was twenty-six. I was supposed to be completing a degree, or traveling, or at least having a drink with friends that didn’t only talk about their tips at the diner. My mates did party but not me. Instead, I was calculating the cost of feeding and bills to pay. "Next stop, Damen," the overhead voice crackled. I stood up, my knees cracking. Every joint in my body felt like it would fail. I’d just finished a ten hour shift, and the sun was barely out. Most people were just waking up while I was just trying to make it to the front of my door.

It's hard to believe that the rumors are true, but people don't know the half of it. Ambrose is sitting in his usual spot, eating his breakfast absently as I come in. "Morning," I say, taking my seat beside him. He grins at me. "You're feeling better?" "So is your thing," I say gesturing to him. "Is it like a full moon thing? You can only shift under the full moon?" Ambrose laughs and the sound lifts my heart higher. "No. I can shift whenever I choose. The need to shift is stronger with the changes of the moon, but they aren't linked together."

There isn’t a timeline for this and not all experience this loss of gifts.’” She hums, “Maybe that’s why I couldn’t see through your glamours before.”

“I think he just partially shifted.” Impossible.

Too many things pointed to a single identity, yet divided into two different persons. Though I am relieved to finally prove that Damon wasn’t my phantom, yet it didn’t make everything easier either. I am now torn between the two of them. My phantom cradled me in his lap as my panic was about to surge. My heart pumping blood so fast that it felt like my veins were about to explode. I even struggled to breathe, choking with air. But then he held me so tenderly in his arms, rocking me slowly, crooning against my ear. Somehow it eased my nerves and helped me relax. I don’t know how he made that happen. Usually, it was he who triggered my anxiety.

Morat bowed, his face showing sincere loyalty. Siron wanted to scream a warning. Don’t trust him! But this was the past. It had already happened. The scenes shifted again, faster now, like fragments of a nightmare. Morat leading Alaric’s armies, waging war against enemies. He fought with gallant bravery, his body moving with speed and strength beyond that of a normal man. In the heat of battle, his body changed, growing larger, skin hardening into scales, claws sprouting from his hands. His true shifter form. He rampaged across the battlefield, tearing through enemies, but always returned to human form once the fighting ceased. Alaric’s forces won because of him.

Oh, well. “Are there any close neighbors?” I ask. “Yeah. But ‘close’ is different for us. Because we can . . .” “Transform into wolves?” “No. Well, yeah, but . . .” His cheeks have an olive tinge. God, I think he’s blushing. Because of course they’d flush green. “Shift. We call it shifting. We don’t become something else. We just kind of toggle between two settings.” This time I do smile, keeping my lips sealed. “Love the coding references.”

Creed whined but gave him control; for that, I was thankful. "To return to your body, do the opposite of what you did to shift. Think of your human self again. It will hurt less than the first time, but we need to prepare you for your second shift." Phoenix nodded before stepping back. "We got this, easy as pie." She smirked, reassuring me. She gave over control as I switched back. I picture my scarlet hair, my toes, my fingers. I pictured my freckles and my sun-kissed skin. The sound of the bones breaking filled the room, but the pain wasn't as bad this time. After a few more shifts, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anymore.

You need to shift.' 'Shift?' I repeat, echoing the voicces words, 'but I can't move, I don't think I can!' I begin to panic. 'I'm sorry, but you must, its the only way, you need to shine.'
