The fragrance of herbs and incense filled my nostrils as Hella opened her wooden door. My eyes widened at the wall of shelves full of jars of numerous ingredients. “Have a seat and make yourself comfortable,” Hella said with a snicker. Making my way into her small living room I sat down on a velvet settee and waited for her to join me. Hella's joints popped as she sank beside me. “You have Phoenix blood and awakened it by being roasted I'm thinking,” she blurted with a toothy grin. Dumbfounded, I just stared at her.

But tonight, it was ours alone. Inside, the air was still, carrying the faint scent of fresh wood and promise. I closed the door behind us, shutting out the world. My cut hung heavy on my shoulders, but when I looked at her, it was like the weight lifted. “Kat,” I said, my voice rough, the name tasting like home. “Tonight, it’s just you and me. By sunset, only Adrian’s people remained. Adrian led her inside, his sharp gaze was all over her. The boy had his mouth hanging open. I looked at them, pulling out my cellphone. "Miranda! how’s Phoenix?" In concern, I inquired. "She is not talking to anyone. She has been sitting in the corner, babbling strange things." She sounded worried. She should be because if anything happens to Phoenix, I will most probably burn down the whole town.

“I’m not asking for forgiveness—just a chance to make things right.” Before anyone could speak, a sharp crackling shattered the uneasy quiet, static energy rippling through the station’s ruins. The hair on my arms stood on end, and the bond between Lucan and me flared with sudden force. “Mira,” Lucan said through gritted teeth. “Do you feel that?” I nodded, pulse hammering. The air thickened around us, charged with a strange warmth. That was when I saw it—the phoenix. It appeared in a dazzling burst of gold, rising from the rubble like a mythical vision dragged from a dream.
