I stayed where I was, letting the silence stretch. She knew I’d always be there, close enough to catch her, close enough to cage her, close enough that escape is an illusion she’s already abandoned.
Finally, her shoulders rose, fell, then tilted ever so slightly, as if the weight of the air itself pressed down. She turned, slow, reluctant, but her eyes still held fire.
“You always win, don’t you?” She asked.
I took a step forward. “I don’t play to win, Davina. I play to keep, but yes I do intend to win while playing.”
