Clara's POV The harsh, artificial blue light of my phone screen burned my retinas in the pitch-black kitchen. He isn't who you think he is. Go to the Grand Pearl tomorrow at noon. Room 412. See for yourself. I read those sixteen words over and over, staring at the screen until the sharp black font blurred into meaningless, jagged shapes against the white background. My thumb hovered half an inch over the glass, trembling violently. Every survival instinct I possessed—every hard-won habit of submission I had learned over four years of domestic warfare—screamed at me to press delete.

The crystal shard embedded in my palm burned, pulsing with an otherworldly glow. Then—light burst from my hands. A cascading wave of pure energy surged forward, sweeping over the Nymari and sending them staggering back. The cave trembled under its force. The creature gasped, arching as the light wrapped around it. The dark veins poisoning its form unraveled, fading. The sickness—disintegrating. The little dove cried out, then spread its wings—fully healed. A stunned silence fell. One of the Nymari whispered, “Impossible…”

“The shard—it’s still active.” She turned to face it, her jaw set. “Then we end this, together.” --- We approached the shard side by side, our combined presence steadying the chaotic energy swirling around it. Aria reached out first, her hands trembling but sure. I followed, placing my hand over hers. The energy surged, trying to repel us, but we held firm. Together, we channeled our strength, pushing back against the artifact’s dark power. The shard let out a final, anguished scream before shattering into a thousand pieces, the light fading as the fragments fell to the ground.

"But we have to be close. We have to—" Light. Ahead, through the trees, I saw it. Real light. Moonlight and torchlight and the blessed, beautiful glow of Shadowfang's defensive positions at the forest edge. "There!" I practically sobbed with relief. "Ronan, we're almost there!" He tried to move faster, but his legs gave out. We both went down hard, hitting the corrupted ground with enough force to drive the air from my lungs. The Shard tumbled from Ronan's hand, rolling a few feet away, still pulsing with that terrible purple light.

She saw the cracks forming in his armor, the instability in his power. “Elijah,” she shouted, “can you disrupt the shard’s connection?” He hesitated, then nodded. “It’ll be risky.” “Do it.” As Elijah focused on the shard, Annabel and Damian kept the figure distracted, their attacks coordinated despite the chaos. The shard’s glow flickered, and the figure let out a roar of fury. Annabel saw her chance. She drove the blade into the shard, the energy exploding outward in a blinding burst of light. When the light faded, the figure was gone, and the shard lay shattered at their feet.

Before I could stop myself, I reached forward and grabbed it. The shard was still warm, sticky with dried blood. Its jagged edges bit into my palm, but I didn’t let it go. Without thinking, I pressed it back into Kyden’s outstretched hand. My own fingers closed over his, forcing him to hold it again. The moment his bloodied skin touched mine over it, a strange pulse rippled through the shard, jolting both of us like a blazing fire in the veins. The fragment began to vibrate faintly and a faint, ghostly light shimmered across its surface. We were both staring at the light, the piece still lying between our palms. The light felt far too subtle, like magical moonlight reflected on still water.

Pulling one of the frame pieces out of the mess, I heaved it with all my strength and shattered the glass. I could get in now, but the snake could also get out. It dropped to the ground and headed for the opening, then shied back, moving slowly and gingerly. The broken glass cut at its scales. It was so desperate for food, it came at me anyway and let the glass slice it to ribbons. That gave me an idea. I picked up a particularly large shard of glass and waited.

"You’ve got this." The biggest beast hissed, its ember eyes narrowing. "You think a flame can stand against the abyss? Foolish." "Maybe," I responded, coming forward and raising my hand. "But it’s my spark." The silver light exploded from my hand, a scorching wave that slashed through the darkness like a sword. The shadow monsters shouted, their shapes disintegrating into vapor as the light tore through them. But the largest one didn’t collapse. It stood firm, its shape wavering but refusing to dissolve.
