"Don't let the ash touch you!" But Cian wasn't listening. He was staring at the grey flakes falling from the sky. One landed on his hand, and he let out a sharp cry. "Mama! I... I forgot the name of the pony!" he whispered, his eyes wide with a sudden, hollow terror. "The shaggy one from the North! What was its name?" My heart stopped. The fire wasn't just burning paper; it was erasing the memories from the minds of everyone nearby. "Mina, get back!" I screamed.

They were different looking from the demon dogs, but still just as dangerous and their pheromones could send even the strongest foggy in the brain. A snort and neigh sounded on the other side of us. I turn to face the Nightmares, seeing their red eyes, and the tip of the horn glint under the moonlight. The Nightmare horse snorts again, and a billow of black smoke pours from its nostrils. “Pets!” Seneca screeches, not at all worried like Mathias and me.

I pull my hand away, and his Adam's apple bobs in his throat. "Please, baby, don't do this to me. I can't...breathe without you..." he croaks.
