Slightly damp at the ends. “Okay,” I said softly. “Time for bed.” “No.” “Your voice says yes.” Poppy shook her head without any real force behind it. “I still have twelve minutes.” “You can’t even keep one eye open right now.” “I can.” Her left eyelid dropped halfway shut immediately. Adrian laughed quietly. “Go to bed, sweetheart. We’ll call again tomorrow.” “If I go to sleep now,” Poppy mumbled, her words already starting to melt together, “does my castle come tomorrow?”

*Isla* “Good morning, dear,” Poppy says, pulling the curtains in front of the window open. I squint at the bright light and try to wake myself up. It took me forever to fall asleep last night, and now that I am awake, I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus. My head is throbbing, and all I can think about is the dirty dreams I had about the king last night. I mutter, “Good morning,” and manage to get my eyes to open as I sit up.

Exhaustion must’ve knocked her out quickly. I had managed to doze off for a while, but something pulled me from the depths of sleep. It took me a moment to realize what it was—a faint sound, almost like a whimper. I sat up quickly, my heart pounding. The room was dimly lit by the faint glow of the bedside lamp, and as my eyes adjusted, I saw Poppy lying on the bed beside me. Her face was twisted in distress, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps. "Poppy," I whispered, leaning closer. "Poppy, wake up!”

I feel like all my exhaustion and troubles are just melting away into a nice blur feeling... Like I don't have a care in the world right now.

In the middle of the night, the faint sound of a door opening woke me. I didn't turn on the light.
