Run Little Mate
He plopped down beside me, his little legs sticking out at awkward angles, and for a while he chattered about everything, how he’d seen a rabbit this morning, how Leah had taught him a silly rhyme, how he thought butterflies should have teeth because “what if they need to chew?”
I let him talk, nodding and laughing at all the right moments, memorizing the way his eyes lit up when he got excited. The sound of his voice, high and earnest, was better than any spell.
But then, slowly, the words faded. His voice grew quieter, softer, until it stopped altogether. I glanced down.
