Kyla stared at the ceiling in her small, dimly lit room, unable to sleep. Lately, her mind had been a battlefield, filled with thoughts she couldn't control. She sighed, reaching for her bag and pulling out two sleeping pills. She swallowed them quickly and lay back on her bed, hoping they would finally give her the rest she desperately needed. Minutes passed, and just as her eyes began to close, the door clicked open. Someone was in her apartment. Her heart raced for a moment before she caught a familiar scent-musky, rich, unmistakable. When she first came back to Coastrock, she had a problem with insomnia, and it was the children's storybooks that lullabied her to sleep most of the time. All the storybooks that she listened to were Caprice’s favorites. The voice that read the storybook sounded gentle and expressive. Caprice fell asleep after listening to the stories for a while, and even Sherry started yawning. She got up with Caprice and headed to the room. John was standing by the wall, leaning against it. His hands crossed as he casually looked at her with a gentle gaze. It was as though they were intimate.

“You know, you’re very good at negotiating bedtime.” He giggled, snuggling into the blankets. So, I gave in. I flipped the book open and started reading, putting a bit of extra drama into the voices just to make him laugh. And it worked—every exaggerated sound effect and funny expression had him clutching his stomach, giggling until his eyes watered. For a moment, the weight on my chest lightened. His laughter was infectious, warm, and for the first time that day, I actually felt… at peace. Eventually, his energy started to fade. His eyelids drooped, his little head tilted against my arm, and his breathing slowed. I kept reading softly until the words no longer reached him—he was out cold.

Her voice not as clear as before instead it was like a whisper. Dawn spoke, “What is it?” Amber took out her phone and said, “Aaron was mumbling something in his sleep and It was something in some other language I recorded it and bought it here.” Ashley and Dawn’s faces became serious as the two got up and Amber gave them her phone with the recording on it. Dawn took the phone in her hand and started to listen to what was in it. While Ashley and Amber watched quietly.

Xavier said as I settled Loise in bed. “Okay,” I nodded, because I had something to ask him as well. I nodded and picked her bedtime stories. It was a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Xavier’s POV I never thought I’d attend a book reading, talk less of one for little children, yet here I was watching Nicole read bedtime stories about a sleeping knight and the princess who came to save him. “You do this to make her sleep at night?” I asked. “Yes, you should also try it since you have that thing… insomnia,” Loise said.

Nathaniel said. “Another one! Another one!” Sebastian requested. Alisa nodded with a smile. “You want another story, Ali?” Nathaniel asked his daughter. Alisa nodded. “I can’t hear you, baby.” Alisa swayed her body at first, then spoke. “Another one!” Nathaniel chuckled, pinching Alisa’s cheek lightly. “Good girl.” They hadn’t seen Serena yet, so they eagerly listened to another story. The last book Nathaniel read was 'Goodnight Moon.' It was the perfect story to get them ready for bed. As he read, he changed his tone and pointed to the items mentioned in the book. By the time he was done, the kids were satisfied.

Elisa cooed. Audre pouted but allowed Elisa to carry her to the bedroom. Elisa's apartment was small with one bedroom, so she had to let Elisa sleep in her room. God knows she could never afford to have a baby room with her paycheck! Elisa read Audre her favorite bedtime story. It was the same story she had read a hundred times before, but Audre insisted she couldn't fall asleep without it. Elisa sat on the bed and watched her daughter fall asleep, which made her envious. She could never fall asleep this fast.

Good choice. I settle into the space beside Lilica as she pulls her duvet over her. She looks up at me with an expectant smile, and I clear my throat before starting the book. It doesn't take long before I hear her snoring. I don't even think it's up to five minutes. Maybe this book is just her sleeping pill. Standing up gently just so she wouldn't wake up, I slip my legs into my shoes as she stirs in her sleep. Once I'm sure she's not opening her eyes or anything, I adjust the duvet on her body before switching off the light.
