LUKA Do you believe in superstition? God? Or the man made belief that we could predict the future or know when something is wrong in the present? Some call it gut instinct. You know that feeling you get when something bad wants to happen, a premonition for either good or bad, mostly bad. That anxious nagging feeling that never goes away even when you ignore it, and will probably cost you when you successfully do. Something was wrong. I can feel it deep in my bones.

Whether they both talk through every hour of the day, or whether they agree that they are both busy and they just talk on the phone at the end of every day, as long as they both are in agreement, that is what’s important. I transferred because I needed distance, a new city, a new station, some kind of fresh start. At least that's what I told myself. Mercer motioned for me to follow him. "Come on. I'll introduce you to the team before they all pass out trying not to think around you." As we walked through the bullpen, the atmosphere shifted. The second heads started turning in my direction, the mental panic somehow got worse. There is something wrong with me. I stumble toward the guard, trying not to let him see how badly my hands are shaking. He turns and starts up the steps without waiting for me. If my own mind is going to betray me, I won't need the Grandmasters’ verdict to destroy me.

Her eyes lingered on him for a while, before returning to her plate, and he felt a rush of strange, unpleasant feelings. Ever since they started the trip back home, he had a premonition of an impending disaster. He couldn't get the other woman out of his head, along with a feeling in his bones that there was going to be a momentous change of fate in matters of day. He felt an immediate impulse to see her then and there, and no matter how hard he tried to suppress it, the urge got stronger with every passing minute.

Harriet leaned over her cup of coffee, her eyes focused on me. “No gifts are truly offensive.” Orion piped in, but Harriet threw him a nasty glare. She was upset that Orion knew, but she didn’t. It was written all over her face. “The one I know about is premonitions. I’ve had dreams...but they aren’t really dreams. I had my first premonition the day before my birthday. I...I didn’t know what it was at the time, but I do now.” My eyes fell to the table because I was torn up every time I think back on it now that I couldn’t save our pack.
