I picked up my cliché: Pride and Prejudice. The copy I had at home was worn and battered from being read so many times. Its cover was creased and marked from years of use. But this one was different. It was a red hardcover with golden lettering. It looked as though it had never even been opened. Would I be the first? There was something ironic about fate. Me being the first to open this book when I had never even been touched myself. Never been “opened.” I smiled to myself at my ridiculous thought.

She continuously shifts it around, nervous as Max's gaze is now on her. "Max, have you ever read the book?" Jessica glances at him momentarily, scrutinizing his visage. "Of course he hasn't. She treats him harshly because of his wealth and seemingly obvious pride, but she does not realize that he is not as spoiled and rude as he may first appear. I must be the only person in my class that will read a classic novel for anything other than requirement. I couldn’t think of anyone I knew that would pick up Jane Eyre, Little Women, or Tess of the D’Urbervilles for pleasure. In fact, they were not even my first choice. Little Women came in a close second, but Pride and Prejudice will always win out. There was something beautiful about a couple from two different backgrounds traveling along the bumpy road of love until it was undeniable, and there was something even more beautiful about watching that journey happen. She wasn't sure if she was ready to risk her heart again, especially not with someone she barely knew. As she finally found the "Pride and Prejudice" she was searching for, nestled amongst a collection of dusty tomes, a wave of relief washed over her. It was a beautiful edition, the leather cover worn but supple, the pages yellowed with age. It was a treasure, a piece of literary history that she would cherish.

His sleek black hair was loose around his shoulders and he wore a white shirt, sleeves rolled up. "What are you reading?" His voice was cold. “Pride and Prejudice,” I said and he moved closer to the bookshelf across from where I sat, his long fingers traced the spines of the books. "Elizabeth Bennet refuses to bend to anyone's will," he said, his voice had that rough quality it got when he was thinking hard about something. "She's stubborn." "Like me?" I asked. "Exactly like you,” he said and he pulled a book from the shelf without looking away from me. Then he sat in the chair opposite mine, the fire crackled between us and he opened his book and started reading.

"Was it love at first sight? Or did I have to win you over?" "Alright, Miss Bennett, I'll tell you." "What?" Her face was confused, so it was my turn to grin at her. "It's from 'Pride and Prejudice'. There's a chapter where Elizabeth makes Darcy account for his falling in love with her. It's one of my favorite parts of the book, and it never gets put into the movies." Sarah nestled in closer. "Yup, just like that, then." "When I opened the door, I couldn't move. I'd never felt like that before, about anyone."

Even the carpets and various furniture Hael had were black. ‘Goddess, does he even have a personality?’ Lacey scoffed. ‘There’s no color, no anything in here.’ Across the room, a bookshelf caught my eye. It was stacked top to bottom with books, most of them old and without titles. I slid one from its spot, a thick text with navy blue binding etched in gold. The inside of the book read, ‘Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.’ It wasn’t just the fact that Hael read books that made me pause, but the signed autograph on the inside cover.

The only one I find that slightly fit the description is my favourite book of all time, Pride and Prejudice. I smile despite myself. Of course Massimo owns a copy. A thick leather-bound edition too that has probably never been touched. I tug it free from the shelf and carry it to the armchair in the corner, curling my legs beneath me, my sweater sliding off one shoulder. It’s too quiet in here. Almost as if I'm the only one in this big, grand house. The silence stretches long enough to suffocate me and my thoughts, and is only broken from time to time by the distant tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway.

I wanted to read, to do something that reminded me of normalcy. I looked at my growing shelf of books and decided to pick Pride and Prejudice. It was one of my favorite books as I was a sucker for romance novels. I flipped to the first page and began. "It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
