“Okay, okay. I believe you. But what exactly are we supposed to do about that?” Before I had the chance to reply, a low-tone rhythm reached my ears, like the echo of quiet incantation. “Do you hear that?” I said, my voice little more than a whisper. Jameson nodded and braced his body. “Yeah. It’s coming from up ahead.” The ruins were hidden beneath a cover of ancient trees, their twisted branches wobbling like skeleton fingers. There was real energy in the air, and with each inhalation playing emotions on replay in my chest.

“Then we follow.” Cassian looked like he wanted to argue, but after a tense moment, he sighed and gestured ahead. “Stay close.” Lena nodded, and together, they stepped deeper into the ruins, following the whispers of the dead. --- The path wound through the remains of Varelith’s once-majestic streets, the skeletal figures moving in eerie silence, leading them toward what had once been the city’s heart. Towering columns, broken and half-buried, lined the path, their surfaces covered in ancient runes.

“I’m not here to hurt them. I’m here to remind you what’s at stake.” She turned, vanishing into the deeper dark of the church with Liana trailing after like sleepwalking. I followed. Of course I did. Through crumbling halls, down broken steps, into the catacombs beneath the ruin where lights flickered faint and red. The deeper we went, the colder it grew. Until at last, we reached it. Another vault. Another project. Not Site Eleven. Not Site Twelve. Something older. Forgotten. Liana stopped at the threshold. Her eyes met mine—clear, terrified. “Mommy, I’m scared.”

“This is it.” She pressed the moonstone into the hollow at the center of the spiral. The ground rumbled softly beneath them, and the symbol flared to life with pale blue light, radiating outward in gentle waves. With a low groan, the earth split to reveal a staircase spiraling downward into the belly of the ruin. A cold draft rushed out, carrying with it whispers too ancient to decipher. “Stay close,” Kael said, drawing his dagger as they descended into the gloom.

I can almost hear whispers carried by the currents, as if the ruins themselves were speaking to me. Jericho's grip tightens on my arm, his eyes searching for any signs of danger. Lumina, ever ethereal and composed, guides us with grace and assurance. "The path ahead may be treacherous," she warns. "These ruins guard their secrets fiercely." I take a deep breath, summoning my courage and steeling myself against the encroaching darkness. We follow Lumina through a narrow corridor, the walls adorned with intricate symbols and faded murals. The air is heavy with a sense of ancient history, as if time itself has been trapped within these submerged walls.

"The ruin. We have progressed too far to go back now. Kael gave a nod. After that, it's resolved. We head for the wreckage. Remain vigilant and united. As they got closer to the old ruins, the lush woodland gave way to rough terrain, making the walk exhausting. The gathering fell into a spooky silence as the temperature dropped. The ruins themselves towered in front of them, their deteriorating stone constructions half-buried by the forest that was advancing. Zara said, "Remain close," in a voice that was almost audible above a whisper. "We have no idea what we'll discover inside."

I could feel him tightening his guard again, as though he was preparing for a war. The entrance to the ruins was exactly where Gwen said it would be. It was half-buried under roots and stones, a set of crumbling stairs disappearing into the earth. "Ready?" Clarissa asked. I glanced at Zion, then back at her. "No," I said. "But let's go in anyway." The air shifted the moment we stepped inside. Dust coated the stone walls, and vines pulsed faintly with bioluminescent light. We made it maybe ten steps in before the door behind us sealed shut.

The moment he did, the ground beneath us began to shake. “We need to move,” I said urgently. The ruins began to collapse around us as we ran, the sound of crumbling stone echoing in our ears. We navigated the twisting corridors as quickly as we could, the glowing symbols on the walls flickering and fading. “Almost there!” I shouted, spotting the exit up ahead. We burst out into the open air just as the ruins caved in completely, a cloud of dust rising into the sky. “That was too close,” Aaron said, catching his breath.

Her trembling body leaned against the door, no longer able to support herself on her shaky legs. "ANYONE HERE! SAVE ME! P-please s-save m-me" Her voice merged into whisper at last, feeling her hopes getting crushed. Hiccups were leaving her mouth continously. Her body flinched hearing playful whistles from her behind. "Done with your adventure, baby?" Edward chuckled, sauntering down the staircase with taunting smirk, his hands dipped inside his pockets, buttons of his shirts open yet the navy blue shirt was on, giving peak to his toned chest.

“We already aren’t the same. And if we leave it untouched, it’ll come for us anyway. In dreams. In shadows. In everything I try to become. The only way out is through.” I placed my palm on the seam. There was no rumble. No dramatic quake. Just a breath—a long, slow inhale from the depths of the earth, like the ruin itself had been waiting for someone to exhale permission. Then, slowly, the wall began to split. A narrow staircase unfolded downward, carved not in stone, but in something darker—bone? No. Not bone. Something older. Something hollowed. Maxwell raised his blade. “Last chance to turn around.”
