I said, handing it to her. She smiled even as her eyes welled up and she reached for it. I hoped the fact that I wasn't down on a knee was heads-up enough before she got too ahead of herself about what it might be. She opened the box and her hand was back over her mouth. "I know it's not much, Peanut," I said with a wince. "But it's just a promise ring. A promise that someday I'll have so much more to offer you."

Looking at another sandwich box in front of her, Anna looked at Brandon in surprise. ‘Is he, is he pitying me?’ Anna felt annoyed.
