They were the canvas for my next masterpiece. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small vial of concentrated methylene blue, a medical grade dye. In small doses, it’s harmless. In "Jean-Pierre" doses, it has a very specific side effect: it turns the consumer’s skin a delicate, sickly shade of Smurf, the blue ones. Soon though, their conversation was interrupted as both vampires turned to their left. A girl was coming towards them, she had deep blue hair, the colour so rich, it almost looked black. However it was clear it wasn't natural, the colour was slightly faded at her roots. She had piercing, pale blue eyes and sharp upward arched eyebrows. Her lips were pursed and tinted black with lipstick and her fangs stuck out lightly. Vampire.

She strains the blue mixture into a glass vile. "How will we know when it's ready?" I inspect the blue velvet liquid. "It will turn dark blue. The color of the night sky."

Then it pulsed. Thin lines branching outward from a central point beneath her flesh. Veins of shadow spreads slowly, faintly glowing red beneath her skin. That had not been there before. I stepped closer. “What is that?” I demanded. The doctor barely glanced at it. “Subdermal hemorrhaging. Possibly a vascular reaction to trauma.” “It was not there,” I said sharply. He leaned closer this time, frowning. One of the nurses angled a brighter light toward her arm. The dark marking reacted, It shifted. Spreading slightly higher.

What had once been a faint discoloration had deepened into something unmistakable. A crescent curved along the side of my neck just below my jaw, its edges soft and blurred like a bruise blooming beneath the skin. The color settled into shades of deep indigo and muted violet, darker toward the outer arc, where the shape sharpened into faint, clawed ridges. The curve looked almost like a storm-wind sweeping across my throat. At the center of the crescent, a narrow lightning vein cut downward. It was thin, jagged, pale silver against the darker tones surrounding it. Not bright enough to glow, but bright enough that the shape stood out sharply if someone looked closely.

The veins along his forearms pulsed with a subtle, faint golden light beneath his skin—so faint I thought my exhausted eyes were playing tricks on me. He slid his palm slowly across the surface of the coarse fabric. Before my very eyes, the impossible happened. Where his skin touched the rough, stiff fibers, the harsh, uneven muddy beige began to bleed away. A rich, deep, iridescent midnight-blue spread through the threads like liquid ink soaking into dry paper, radiating outward in soft, shimmering waves. But it wasn't just the color.

Still thin, still translucent at the edges, the blue veins visible beneath the surface like roads on a map too small to read. But warmer. The reddish flush had faded to something closer to pink, actual baby pink, the color that meant alive and getting better instead of alive and holding on. I traced his fingers. Long and narrow and impossibly small, each one curling slightly inward, the nails barely visible. My fingers. My mother’s fingers. Nobody else’s. His chest rose and fell so quickly it still didn’t look like breathing to me. Still looked too fast. A tiny engine running at full speed.
