I leaned in closer, eager to hear her thoughts on the book. "That's wonderful to hear," I replied, my curiosity piqued. "What did you love most about it?" Sophia huffed softly, suddenly very interested in the handle of her mug. “You’ll tell me about the book when you’re done reading?” He asked gently, moving closer to her. Sophia looked up, “What?” She didn’t quite get what he meant. “You’ll summarize it for me.” He told her clearly. Still not understanding why there should be any need for that, she asked him, “Why?” Alex chuckled, “Because I want you to talk to me about the book you were reading. I’m interested in knowing what the book is about, but rather than reading, I'd prefer if you tell me about it,” his gaze felt warm as he glanced back at her, “Alright?”

I said, and his eyes widened. “What? I’ve read this book repeatedly.” His words confused me, and all I could think of was another ruse to lure me into believing he had changed. But there was a voice in my head that urged me to stay, and what harm could come from discussing a book? I thought to myself. “What is your favorite part of the book?” I asked, and he opened his mouth to speak, then I decided to lay a trap. “Did you think it was right for her to end up with Bruno?” I asked, and he scoffed.

His questions and her answers and the afternoon going gold around all of it. It was so ordinary it took my breath away a little. It was a book on a nightstand. It was candles at nine in the morning. It was a man who used to not read books that cost something sitting across a kitchen island asking well, and meaning about six different things by it, and me saying you were right and meaning the same six things back. I closed the book at the page I'd reached and held it for a moment. I set the book on the coffee table.

I've never been to his house before and I didn't quite realize it until now. . . . . . . .
