Forgot to tell you sooner. He had sent me messages almost three hours ago. I smile and reply. Me: That’s Ok! Sorry I didn't answer you sooner. I didn’t feel like attending, so I skipped. As we reach home, I behold myself to receive some lame one-liner about skipping classes. “Maybe something funny. I need to laugh.” Tariq nodded. He flipped through the channels until he found a comedy film. As the movie started, we both settled into the rhythm of eating and watching. Tariq kept sneaking glances at me, teasing me lightly every now and then. “So, do you always laugh that much at terrible jokes, or is it just when I am around?” Tariq asked, his tone playful as the actors on screen delivered another corny punchline. I rolled my eyes but couldn’t help the smile that spread across my face. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

He grins. “One moment they are ‘fuck you youngest child’ and in the next they want us to produce the next population of the country. It’s like ‘make up your mind will ya? Are we important or not?’”, He continues joking, eyes lighting up when he hears me chuckle a second time. “Yeah, literally”, I agree, having to lower my eyes. I feel far too ashamed. I not only chuckled at one of his jokes, but at two of them. And I did so because I actually found them funny.

"You have no idea–I was just joking around, but those disgusting guys went crazy asking me for your contact." The old me would have already been crying, asking her how she could do this to me, voice breaking. Not this me. My teeth clenched so hard they hurt. My whole body trembled with anger. I snatched the flyer out of her hand and slapped her across the face. Tara screamed, clutching her cheek in disbelief. "You hit me? I treat you like my best friend, and you can't even take a joke anymore?" Best friend? I let out a cold laugh.

Because of that, she slowly gave in and laughed along with him. “That’s so corny,” she commented while laughing. “I have another one. What key opens a banana?” “What?” “Monkey!” They both laughed at the same time, and the irritation she had felt earlier was completely replaced with happiness.

Leesa had to give the guy credit. He didn’t seem to let the catcalls and groans bother him. He either had the thickest skin in the world, or he thought the derision was in some twisted way an approval of his act. His jokes were new, but were equally as dumb as the last time. She wondered if he wrote the stuff himself or got it from some website—stupidjokes.com, maybe.
