Mate Rebound
Savire’s voice rang, calm but filled with malice, breaking through the babble.
I stumbled back with an animal pant, my chest heaving, gutted and bloody, the tablet clutched in my bleeding hand and ran, the alarms of the safehouse screaming, flames licking its rising walls as I reached the edge of the forest and hit the trees, the underbrush scratching at me. In a clearing blanketed with hoarfrost, my breath steaming, my hands shaking with the loss of blood, I read across the tablet the shutdown sequence, the words burning into my head: “Alpha will require the death of a vessel.” I said hoarsely, as rusty as if I hadn’t spoken in years, “One of the twins has to die?”
