I caressed his snout. Alexander leaned to my touch, symbolizing that he was acknowledging me as his master along with Claude. This was Claude's favorite horse, too.

It was dark, but with a shimmery grey cast and a steel-grey mane and tail. The horse eyed Poppy curiously. "Oh, aren't you pretty?" She reached to gently stroke the horse's smooth coat. There had to be at least thirty stalls total all immaculately kept with a variety of different horse breeds poking their heads through open stall doors. A coal black Arabian played with the ends of my hair while I stopped to pet a rust and cream colored Paint. But the most magnificent of all of the beasts in this barn was in the very last stall. Kingston, was an Eighteen hand Gypsy Vanner stallion, with a jet black coat and white dappling on his hind quarters. His mane and tail were snow white with his feathers matching. I stood back as Ronan opened the stall and led the massive horse out. I could tell just by looking at the two there was a long, loving history between the two of them.

The horses were saddled and ready to go when we reached the stable in the morning, including mine. "What will you name him?" Ronan asked, leading a fair-boned palomino that reminded me of a fire-breathing dragon. I didn't know how he managed to handle the mare. She pinned her ears at everything around her, and pranced constantly, unable to stay still. "I haven't decided yet," I admitted, watching as Ronan swung easily into the saddle of his horse, her nostrils flaring. "You ought to name him Ragnar, just another oversized dwarf," Magnus chuckled, leading a blue roan horse with sleepy eyes and ears tipped in black outside.

For a while, I stayed quiet, too hyper-aware of the heat of his body against mine, the way his shirt was damp from sweat, how his hair smelled faintly of watermelon shampoo and outdoors. But silence never lasted long with me. “So… technically this makes you my noble steed,” I said after a few minutes, smirking against his shoulder. “Does that mean I get to name you?” His shoulders shook with quiet laughter. “I don’t think it works that way.” “It does. I’ve decided your horse name is Sir Gallops-a-Lot.” “Sir Gallops-a-Lot?” His voice was amused, incredulous. “Yes,” I said firmly. “And as your rider, I demand snacks.”

I stared back, enjoying the challenge while Jade tried to pull me away so it wouldn't charge at me. “Petty much?” she cackled. “The horse doesn't seem to like me. What's his name?” “Polly,” he answered briefly. “He's a six year old stallion, fast and fit for races, but the owner sold it to us for tourism purposes. That's why he's so cranky,”

It’s so lifelike that Alessandra’s striking eyes almost seem to follow me as I move. “Is that her horse?” Karl asks. Reginald hums to himself. “Yes; Zephyr was his name. The horse I rode today, Eva, is Zephyr’s daughter.” Karl falls silent. I guess that explains the strange connection he had with that horse today; perhaps their blood recognized one another. Children of two illustrious beings.
