My heart slammed against my ribs.
Garbie froze mid-twirl, her joy vanishing in an instant. She had heard it too.
She barreled toward me, grabbing my arm. “Did you hear—”
Before she could finish, another snarl sounded—this time, from above.
Our heads snapped up.
The rain distorted the sky, but through the watery blur, dark shapes took form. Twisted, elongated creatures clung to the branches above us. Their bodies looked half-solid, half-liquid, shifting with the rain. Their eyes—if that’s what they were—glowed an unnatural shade, swirling like liquid silver.
