“Can we go?” Ray nodded. “Sure.” The library was tucked behind tall iron doors at the end of a quiet wing. A guard stopped us as we approached and looked down at Ray’s boots. “No muddy boots in the library.” Ray looked at his feet and groaned. “Seriously?” I laughed. “It’s okay. I’ll just be a second. I already know what I'm looking for.” “You sure?” “Yeah. I’ll be fine.” Ray stepped back, muttering something about needing a nap, and I slipped inside.

Raymond’s POV I hit the base floor, heart pounding now. My boots thudded against the tile a little too loud. The librarian—Cassandra—looked up from her desk, brows furrowed. "Is everything alright?" "No," I said quietly. "Do you have a back exit?" Her eyes widened just a touch. She nodded. "Through the archives," she whispered. "But sir—those men upstairs—" "Yeah. I saw them. I don’t think they’re here for the books."

Naomi’s POV The hallway echoed under my heels as I made my way toward the library. I wasn’t looking for a book—at least not the kind you read. I needed silence, a place to think. But more than that, I needed space from him. Raymond. Ever since the dinner, he’d been acting differently, not cold—but careful. Like he was watching me and not just with his eyes. With his mind. I pushed the door open and stepped in. The smell of leather and old pages wrapped around me, dust motes floated in golden slivers of light. Everything about this place screamed power and legacy, Darlington legacy.

Jen said i could do it so i believed i could, i knew i could get my footing again. Raymond thought to himself, since when did that happen? For the whole afternoon, Raymond had been half-minded even with work. Mathilda got bored with him and went home herself, taking Raymond's driver with her. Getting nowhere with both Evelyn AND the mysterious girl he slept that night suddenly made his huge office with a French window stuffy for him, so instead of waiting for his driver, Raymond left for his new school alone. His building was right over the Hudson River, a two-hour train ride to Forks University, the new school he built for his pack along Long Beach, the first ever werewolf school where his species could no longer hide their true self.

Raymond didn’t join Alex and Justin at the restaurant. Instead, he pulled out his phone and checked for nearby opportunities. Spotting a bar in need of temporary live performers, he immediately hailed a cab and headed over. All he wanted right now was a drink, but he needed to earn some cash first. Once he had enough to buy alcohol, he could drink until he didn’t have to think anymore, hoping the booze would numb the pain within him. While Raymond headed to the bar, Lindsay and Wendy’s groups went to the lighthouse by the beach. The three of them spent a good amount of money enjoying all the entertainment activities around the lighthouse.

It opened with a soft click. The study was bathed in shadow, lit only by a single dying candle on the far desk. The room smelled of parchment, ink, and the faint metallic tang of weapons kept hidden in the cabinets lining the walls, bookshelves towered on either side of the room, filled with thick, leather-bound volumes whose titles were worn and unreadable. I slipped inside and closed the door behind me, my pulse racing. The desk was my target. Raymond always sat there when he was working late, always tensing when I came too close, as if he feared I might see something I wasn’t supposed to. Tonight, that fear would be justified.

“Should I cancel the banquet, my queen?” Athena looked up from the leather-bound book in her hand. It was titled Mystery of the Silver Curse. She pondered Lorraine's question as she looked around the study they were currently in. Raymond's study. The cinnamon-and-spice scent she had begun to unconsciously attach to him was heavy in the room. Dark oak furniture showed this was a man’s place. Apparently, a man who loved to read. Because apart from one section of the wall, every other was filled with floor-to-ceiling shelves stocked with books spanning werewolf mythology, business, agriculture, leadership, and even fiction.

I waved my hand at her and went back inside, aiming for the nicest place in our school, the library. River Oak high school is a rectangular concrete closed box, suspended by rectangular columns, and with skylights on the roof. It's a modern structure with a central atrium and internal floors connected by ramps. Located on the first floor, the library is the only place with normal windows, an oasis of light. Completing the area, there is a long balcony with some comfortable chairs where you can read. It's my favorite spot. Today it is almost desert. Some people are gathered in the front area, probably some study groups. But I'm heading to the back, where nobody ventures and the silence is so
