When I stepped into the lecture hall again the next day, all of the students turned to glare at me—some in disgust, some in content, and some with suppressed anger. There was a pop quiz this morning. I looked up and saw sunlight streaming in through the window. However, most of that sunlight was blocked by Ariel, who was sitting right by the window. I picked up my water bottle, aimed it at the back of her chair, and threw it with all my might. Ariel screamed in shock and turned around at once. "Shawn Larson! What do you think you're doing?"

Hiding in closets during their parents’ fights, whispering stories back and forth, just to feel less alone. Serena had grown used to being alone. But never with Eliora. "Is it snowing there yet?” she asked softly. “A little,” Eliora said, her voice warming. She loved the snow. “Everything’s kind of magic right now. There’s this bookstore I found today. It smells like cinnamon and old pages. I think you’d love it.” Serena smiled faintly. “Take me there one day?” “Promise,” Eliora said without missing a beat. “We’ll have cocoa and sit by the fire. And I’ll make you read something that isn’t a script.”

"Four kids..." Right then, I watched him break. Totally. Like his whole world just bottomed out. "Do you... hate me?" he whispered. I didn't say a word. Right then, Lily—one of my girls—ran up and handed him a crayon drawing. "Mister, is this you?" She pointed to a shadowy figure—chained, crying. Jackson's hands started to shake. His eyes went bloodshot. "How does she even..." "Kids feel everything," I said. "Even the stuff you never say out loud."

That sounded weirdly like me…? When I snapped the book shut, my pulse was already racing. “What are you doing in here?” I jumped so hard that I nearly lost my balance. Roman was standing in the doorway. His broad shoulders filled the space, and his eyes were sharp as they fell on the book I was still holding to my chest. “I was just…” He was by my side in a few strides, and then he snatched the book from my hands. His eyes narrowed even more when he saw the title. Without even opening it, he shoved it under his arm and firmly said, “You don’t need to be reading this, Ava.”

He snapped and walked away. Sasha glanced at the book and sighed as tears rolled down her cheeks again.

She smiled when she saw that it was Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. “All right,” she replied, taking the book from him. In an instant, the book was snatched from her hand and thrown to the floor. Sakura looked up to see Alaina and Tara standing before them, glaring down at her.

She felt like she wanted to cry. But as she looked up, through the dust, suddenly, she spotted something that made her heart stop: the crumbled stack revealed another, smaller stack behind it, one she had not seen before. And there, right in the middle, was a book with a rich, red spine. She recognized it immediately. Suddenly, she felt an electric thrill. This was it. The matching volume. Caitlin nearly lunged across the room, grabbing the book and holding it up to the candlelight with shaking hands.

I snatched up my phone and sat at the edge of the bed. I took a deep breath and unlocked my phone. Clicking on the bared fangs icon, I swiped left, opening up my inbox. My eyes scanned down the list of unread Snarls and locked on one name. Dane. My tongue darted out and slid along my bottom lip. I could already feel my body reacting. Goddess. This guy was so fine, and I hated that I was dripping wet at just seeing his name. I nibbled on my bottom lip and clicked on his message. My face was warm, my body hot, as I stared at a blue square. Dane had sent me a Snarl. I tilted my head and didn’t bother hiding the smile as it spread across my face. I clicked on the square and his video played.
