I won’t tell anyone.” I smiled softly and stepped even closer, backing her gently against the shelves. “Relax. Professor Harlan and I… we have an understanding. But I saw how you looked at us. You didn’t run away because you were scared. You ran because it turned you on, didn’t it?” Her cheeks burned brighter. She shook her head quickly. “No… that’s not… I’m not—”

I said, and Rick nodded as he walked to the center of the room and dropped into a chair. My fingers glide along the books as I read their titles. I pull one out, glance at the first few pages, and then slip it back into its place before continuing. “Hmmm,” I hummed as I squatted to see the books at the bottom. My fingers glide along the books, and my heart stops when I read one of the titles, “How to Reject a Mate and the Consequences that Follow.” Slowly, I pulled the book from its slot and flipped through a few pages.

Boom. A heavy, sickening sound echoed through the snowstorm, like something rotten being crushed apart under immense pressure. Even through the howling wind, it rang clearly in my ears. Then came the stench. A foul, nauseating odor spread through the air. The police car screeched violently to a stop. The two officers practically stumbled out of the vehicle in panic. With trembling hands, they yanked open the back door, and immediately let out horrified screams. There was no blood.

And then I walked towards the young lady who was reading a book. She was so immobile, that even when I took the book from her, she did not make any response or reaction. I hold the book closer to my face, while looking intently at the book my head starts to ache. I turned the pages of the book, and on the last page, there is a hand writing, it says: Please take care of this book. Love, Irina.
