Reading From The Holy Bible Novels & Stories

he says. I blink. “Read?” He nods toward the open Bible on the lectern. “Psalm 51. The Miserere. Aloud.” I hesitate only a second, then cross to the lectern. My fingers tremble as I turn the pages. The text swims for a moment before steadying. “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love…” My voice is soft, unsteady at first. I feel him behind me—close now, just at my shoulder. Not touching, but near enough that the air between us hums.

And it must be true, because, after all these years, she kept it. Hugging it closer to my chest, I went back into the kitchen, sat down pouring myself another glass whiskey, ready to read the Lord's teaching. “If dad can do it, so can I...” I murmured. I opened the book, and it's randomly displaying Roman 16:20, “The God of peace will soon crush Lucifer under your feet,” I read aloud, “The grace of our Lord Jesus be with—” Knock knock My reading was interrupted by someone banging on the door, Who could it be, it's late,

She was desperate for help, and she silently prayed for a miracle. She felt weak. She went to the pews and sat a few rows from the front. As she did, she looked up and noticed an open Bible. It was a thick book, and the header read: The New Testament, The Book of Luke. She scanned the pages, looking for a sign, wondering if her prayer had been answered. She read: “I grant you power and authority over every demon, power and authority over every disease.” Her heart raced. Was it a message?

I just swallowed and nodded weakly . Then saw something under his arm. He followed my gaze, his smile growing even bigger, if that were possible. He pulled out his own yellow hardcover copy of The King Wears Yellow, which for some odd reason, finally moved me to speak. “Where . . . where’s your Bible?” Something flickered in his eyes.

Claudia started reading something from the old script. "Beneath the heaven blessings and the hell curses, among the innocent souls and the cursed souls to be purified for their purity..."

Aside from that, there's no harm in trying. I took out my phone and opened the bible app that came with it, and to my amazement, Mister Handsome was correct. "Proverbs 4:25 says, 'Let your eyes be straight ahead; fix your gaze directly ahead of you.'" The bible chapters from Proverbs were exalted. I suddenly recall something, and things start to make sense to my ear. "Wait! "I thought it was a romantic way of saying sorry?" I asked. "Well. As you can see, the Bible is chock-full of surprises." Mister handsome remarked, smiling.

Jennifer replied "Okay, then you should try that and reading the bible for once. Because that also helps getting rid of anger, too" "You know that it's been awhile since I've read the bible. I wouldn't know what scriptures to read on" "Well, there's Ephesians chapter four verse thirty one and two. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you"

His eyes looked hungry when he saw me. "Come here Michael," he said quietly. "Tonight we finish your penance properly." I walked up the steps until I stood right in front of him. The altar felt cold under my hands when I touched it. Father Elias opened the Bible and turned to a page he had marked. He read the verse in his deep calm voice. "Romans 6 verse 13. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness."

That's when I knew he had the hag, the seer, keeping tabs on me, her eyes everywhere. I make it back to the desolate campsite where our stuff was stored, including the ancient relic the witch had given us, its power humming faintly, to transport us to and from our mission. I took my time changing into my clothing, the familiar fabric a small comfort, and breaking up the camp, erasing our presence, but it didn't take that long; we were only here for a few hours. Closing my eyes, bracing myself, I recited the words to take me home, the familiar incantation heavy on my tongue.
