I swear if I could draw up my perfect home on paper, this would be it. Parking the car, I step out with a notepad and pencil in hand so I can do a rough sketch of the layout of the place. I start drawing the outside as it’s giving me an idea to try and make the outside look like a castle with panels. I can see if the art department can help with this. As I finish my rough sketch a man exits the house and introduces himself to us as Mr. Edwards the manager of the household and he gives us a tour of the house.

Edrick disappeared for a bit, then returned with a cart full of stuff. “Woah!” Ella said, jumping up on the side of the cart to peer in. “That’s a lot of stuff.” Edrick simply shrugged. “There’s a sale,” he said, jabbing his thumb over his shoulder in the direction of the art supply aisle. I peered into the cart as well to see that he had fully stocked up on dozens of containers of crayons, coloring books, miniature canvases, acrylic and watercolor paint sets, and more. “This might be too much, Edrick,” I said with a laugh. “She’s just one kid.”

Edward peered over my shoulder to see what I was holding behind my back. “What’s that you’ve got there, Nina?” I grinned even wider and held the drawing out for him to see.

I could see him coming up now. "Daddy quick come and see what I drew" Edward shouted aloud. I guess he also saw him from afar. "Really I'll be right there son" Jones said smiling at me. He got to us and sat closer to me. "Let's see it" he said and Edward gave him the paper. "Wow" Jones said and I smiled at the work my son did. He draw a family more like us. "This is you daddy and mummy and me and Edwin. " He said identifying it with his little finger.

That has to count for something, right? As the food is cooking, Edward asks me to sit down and color with him. I bring a coloring book and a big box of crayons to the table. “I’m going to draw a picture for Father,” he says to me. “And one for you.” “Thanks, buddy.” I carefully tear out the pages he wants and take one for myself, absentmindedly coloring Mickey Mouse in different shades of pink. “Are you from Chicago?” he asks. “I am.” “Aunt Winnie lived there. I went there before. We took a train!”

When he held up the notepad, it read: “Can we go to the beach?” Killian and I leaned in closer, our eyes fixed on the notepad as Ryker held it up. Beneath his simple request of *Can we go to the beach?*, he had sketched something in his careful, childlike strokes. The drawing showed three figures: one adult male, one adult female, and a small child between them, holding their hands. The sun shone brightly in the background, and the waves were drawn in soft, blue lines. For a moment, we both stared at the image, trying to decipher its meaning. Killian’s brow furrowed as he glanced from the notepad back to Ryker.

He held back tears, curious about the second box. He reached for the second box and opened it. A beautiful, custom-made, square cake depicting an ice hockey rink and a man made of sugar candy standing on the sidelines, holding a cup and tumbler. "This is you," Ethan said, pointing to the sugar figure. "With your favorite plastic cup and tumbler. They're edible, because they're made of sugar candy." Tears filled Adrian's throat. He turned and looked at Ethan, who was smiling across the counter.

One of the women’s hair was done with a yellow pencil while the other was black, the child had tiny dots around her head to imitate hair, but what they all had in common was the yellow circles hovering over their heads and the triangle wings.
